p.1 #1 · Fujifilm x100 or x100s?

I'm selling all our DSLR gear (D700s, primes, flashes, etc), shutting down our wedding photo biz, and buying a Fujifilm body for my do *everything* camera this summer. The only question is whether to go with an x100 or an x100s. I'd been set on the x100s for a while, but I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a better idea to just stick with the x100.

The main reason I'm considering the x100 is price; they regularly go for around $650 in the buy/sell forum here, while the x100s is typically between $1250 and $1300, which, of course, is the brand new price. Is the "s" worth the extra $600-650?

Although I ultimately think the x100s is the stronger camera (particularly in the ISO and AF arenas), it's hard for me to drop the cash on it when I see how the x100 price dropped in half once its successor was released. But I'm not planning on waiting for that to happen with the x100s, so...

If you have an x100 or x100s, why do you have one instead of the other?

I have an X100 because I bought one when they first came out. If I was buying in today, it would be an X100s.

before you buy it, you need to know that X100s has different color from X100.

p.1 #4 · Fujifilm x100 or x100s?

Check out these fuji forums. Very helpful and informative. I've opted to buy a used late model X100 with which to play and discover if I like the form factor. I'm keeping my DSLRs. The main reason I chose the X100 over the X100s was that I'm not sure I'd appreciate the occasional issues with developing Xtrans sensor RAW images (e.g. trying to figure out which RAW converter works best to minimize/eliminate the water color effect, not smear colors, etc.) . I'm pretty anal about my RAW conversions and I know myself well enough to realize I'd be stressing about potential Xtrans issues every time I opened a file and I'm just not interested in going there If the X100s had a traditional, better supported sensor, I'd have bought one in a heartbeat given that it seems to be, by many accounts, a more capable camera.

Good luck with your decision!

Definitely the X100, unless you need manual focus. The X100s autofocus still doesn't bring it into anything close to DSLR quality, and the firmware updates to the X100 make the autofocus gap much smaller than you would think. As someone here put it, the difference between the original X100 and the X100 with updated firmware is much bigger than the one between the X100 with updated firmware and the X100s.

The X-Trans sensor is a major problem for right now. The X100, however, has a terrific sensor capable of producing beautiful images. I strongly disliked the way the X100s files look, which made me appreciate the look of the original X100 images much more than when I owned one.

If you need manual focus, there's only one way to go, and that's the X100s. Otherwise, though, the X100 will suit you just fine. The EVF of the X100s is better, but it's not like the X100 has a bad one. It's just not as good.

I've owned both, and it's a tough call. The X100s is a better and faster camera in many ways, particularly in terms of manual focus, but I like the output of the X100 more, so it depends on how picky you are with the raws. I've ultimately decided on neither, but, were I to buy again, I might actually go X100.

Hey.. I own the x100s and have owned the X100 in the past. I loved the X100 but I love the X100s even more. It is a great camera and I have not seen any issues with the RAW files as some people indicate.
I have written a few posts about the camera on my blog if you want to see examples and such.

How's that for concensus?

There's another way to look at it. Regardless of which one is "best", buy a used X100 now. If it doesn't turn your crank, then sell it for very little loss and get an X100s. Cheaper than renting.

Seems like $700 (US) is the going rate for a used X100 ?

I purchased an LE X100 in very nice condition with some accessories for $750. You have to shop around for the deal you're looking for.

Looks like I am doing a straight across trade for a X100 plus goodies for my 5D Classic in the morning...

Hopefully this will work out. Right now my "portable" run and go kit comprises the following options:

I) Really old Sony point 'n shoot 7mp Cybershot camera
2) Way, way old film based Olympus XA ( can't let it go for some reason)
3) iPhone 5

Of the three my iPhone does the job and gets used because its always with me. Its perfect for Facebook pics but I have never tried to print any of the files. I want a better walk around casual camera. Hopefully the X100 will fit the bill. I can always sell it if I don't like it for any reason...

I'll be a contrarian and suggest the following:

get the x100 and use the money you save to keep one DSLR and an 85mm. That seems like the best of both worlds to me!

I had the same thought and went with the x100. used 650 usd. Love the files and am happy with the decision. Great up to 1600 and love the colors.focus is low and I am not minding it yet slows me down and makes me think.

I have owned an X100 (3) times, as well as an X-Pro1... I have my original X100 LE kit back in my hands, and I love the files it produces... the X-Trans sensor is no doubt good, but the colors and stuff from the original X100 are stuill very, very hard to beat...

Wow, it seems like you guys are all over the map so far. I'm still not sure at all!

akclimber - I only shoot jpeg (whether with weddings or personal work), so no RAW worries...

luminosity - I rarely manual focus, and would probably use the AF exclusively except for when it let me down in the dark...

jcolwell - that's not a bad idea. The higher ISO reach of the x100s is calling me, though...

benee - oh no, we're selling the two D700s once our last weddings are done. I want one camera for everything!

Decisions, decisions...

How often are you shooting at ISO 3200 or 6400?

Personally, I'd get an X100s over an X100. It's just a much more enjoyable camera to use, and more responsive than its predecessor in every way.
