Greetings to all.

I made the plunge and got a 1 D X.

Some of you may recall that I posted some shots of the Swift, the fasted bird in flight (although not as fast as a Falcon in a dive) taken with the the Mk IV and the 1D II N and that there was very little between them.

I tried the I D X yesterday on some Swifts and I think I got my best shot so far with it. See what you think.

The shot was taken in heavy cloud when the birds were flying low and skimming the trees. These guys are just like black bullets in the sky and I find I have to way over expose to try and get some detail. I used a flash with a Better Beamer too.

I also include a few Black Kite shots taken today when a strong wind was disrupting their flight pattern and sent them my way.

C&C welcome.
Thanks for looking.
Martin

Congrats on the new body Martin. How you got that first shot at that shutter speed (1/640s)is beyond me. I would have thought a minimum of 3-4x that would be needed to freeze the motion. I guess using the flash is what does the trick? And I do find the 1Dx a superior tracking/locking camera as well.

Excellent BIFs, Martin. This alleviates some of my concerns about whether the iDX will do as good a job for wildlife photographers as the iDIV when the day comes that it is time to consider a new body.

Thanks Eric.
On the shutter speed I wonder if another factor is how fast one is panning relative to the subject. I would agree on the flash being important too in freezing the motion.
Cheers,
Martin

You are pretty 'Swift' too Martin to nail that one! Exposure is really excellent too

Nice work on the Kites, you have the meanest of machines now buddy, enjoy its benefits!

Good stuff, Martin.
It's a brave person, indeed, who even TRIES to photograph a swift in flight.
And you got a good one.
Many years ago I was playing golf on the coastal cliffs of Torrey Pines (near San Diego), and something zoomed past my ear so close and so fast it startled the hell out of me. Following its flight, I saw that it was a swift in pursuit- no doubt- of flying insects. The bugs would have no chance against a tiny rocket like that... with its big mouth wide open .

Huge congrats on the 1DX, and very impressive detail on the IF of the Swift Martin.
Love the pastel sky with clouds for the Black Kite in #2.
Well done and enjoy your new camera.

Nice set, Martin; technology is wonderful, and it's so much fun to use new gear in a way that takes advantage of technological strengths. (AF still seems almost unbelievable). But, what you didn't mention was acquisition and panning expertise...getting and keeping that Swift in the viewfinder requires a lot of skill...Great job!

Congrats on the new body Martin. The swift looks great. Great tracking to get that shot at that ss. I use 1/2500 or faster when I play with my peregrines.
