p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Poll. How I handle an HDR scene

After the last post on what filters to use (where there seemed to be more love for software) and then seeing Scott's post using the graduated ND filter. I thought it might be interesting to see what most people are using in there own work. I personally have evolved from option 1 through to option 5 stopping at all in between. I used to almost always use filters but hardly do anymore. Feel free to post a photo displaying an example if you want.

Have a great day Brian

Filters if I can. If the filters need some help I'll do a little blending. If the filters are just hurting me then I'll just do blending.

For large DR shots I always use ND grads, often Reverse, but I often need to blend anyway. But I also take a few sets without filters and use the one that needs the least post processing.

I use my own blend method called gaussian blur. I use three images but often find motion blur between shots in which case I just use three conversions of the same shot.
I had Photomatix 4 years ago and took a class but never got it to work for me.

The only filters I use in the field are (non-graduated) neutral density filters and polarizing filters. In my work, with scenes that might have required filters in the field back in the film days, I have far ore flexibility, control, and power by deferring such things to post. Plus I don't have to carry and fiddle with filters.

They made a lot of sense with film but far less so with digital in virtually all cases.

That said, I wouldn't put any of these techniques off limits. Choice of technique or technology is not a moral or ethical choice. It is a practical choice in the service of producing the photograph that best achieves your goals for the image.

gdanmitchell pretty much summed it up. What ever works for you is the way to go. I just don't have the patience to mess around with filters. They get scratched, dirty, rained on, etc. Bad enough dealing with the lens getting wet

Again, once you get blending down, so SO much easier - in my experience anyways,.
