Jeffrey, I also enjoy viewing fine art photography, preferably in person and in the form of prints. Yesterday I spent a few hours in an exhibit of the work of Garry Winogrand, for example. So you are not alone in enjoying fine art photography.
One thing that strikes me, though, is that there is almost never an exhibit of a single photograph. Have you even been to such a thing? I've seen as few as perhaps a half dozen photographs hung for public display, but quite often far more than that are shown. This not only works, but in many ways, at least for those who are interested in giving some time to the process if viewing, it let's me/us see and understand the artist('s') work more thoroughly and draw connections among photographs in order to develop a sense of the person's style.
I know that you may be simply sharing a personal preference, and that is fine - we all have them. However, displaying more than one photograph in the same "space" is the norm, and displaying only a single image is the exception. (That said, the photo posts in this forum are occasionally used in some odd and sometimes transparent ways, aren't they? ;-)
Speaking of exceptions, I can partially relate to what you write about "avoid[ing] blogs, flikr (sic), pbase, facebook, twittr (sic), and other digital dumpsters," but it is possible to be more selective with any or all of these sites. For example, you can fairly easily set up facebook and the others to give you quick access to those whose work interests you most. That's how I've set things up, and I have developed friendships with folks who do the photography I like most, to the point that we now get together in the "real" world, too.
Take care,
Dan
