Here are a couple of quick sample of the lens performance resolving detail at 1120mm. Stopped down a bit for DOF and clarity. Straight conversion to JPG, no other editing.

Arthur, at our age every little bit helps.
I should also mention to you that my favourite shooting position for stationary/slow moving targets with heavy-long lenses is the "kneeling marksman". The benefits are several:

(1) Increased stability compared to a free standing stance, and better IQ, possibly better framing precision as well.
(2) Reduced strain of supporting the lens/camera.
(3) Much lower image perspective than when standing.

(The "kneeling marksman" stance obviously doesn't work well when shooting targets high up in a tree etc.)

Having a good contractor or mil spec grade pad for your right knee is essential.

Peter and Art when you are in the kneeling position is your left elbow positioned slightly past the knee as in the image? I ask as I have found myself that my elbow rests on my leg just before the knee. I am wondering if it is better to move the elbow past the knee as in the image or if it is a factor of a person's length of arm. I find it comfortable but sometimes it might just be a situation of getting used to a slightly different altered position to get better stability with the elbow beyond the knee. Your thoughts.

Mitesh, what teleconverters are you stacking?

Jason,

I used the internal 1.4 and a 2x III. Like you, on my 5D3 I got no AF or IS at f/11 or smaller. I do appreciate your idea of AFing at f/8 and then dropping the 1.4 in place as a workaround for when you want to use AF with stacked TCs. It works well for static subjects. Live View CDAF didn't work well for me in today's case, but I haven't tried it often enough to judge it.

Robert, I normally place my elbow about 2" above the kneecap, but that position tends to shift a bit depending on the shot elevation, adjusting for comfort, etc.
However, the posture objectives are clear, so each one of us makes adjustments to suit their physique, the environment, etc., and yet attain the objectives.

Thanks, Peter. Definitely nice to see such IQ if you occasionally need to reach 1120mm.

Here are three images out of a series of staccato bursts within a total of roughly 100 frames using the 1DX/400 II with a 1.4x III attached. This was handheld for the whole sequence without any significant discomfort (of course, the excitement of the moment does provide some adrenalin to mask this).

I followed the bird, a Breeding White-faced Ibis, from a small image in the distance until it landed fairly close and sat for a while waiting for the rest of its family/companions. It was a very gloomy overcast day - not too conducive for BIF captures. Some crop involved.

Not really the 200-400 but I surmise that its weight distribution would offer an agility advantage that could possibly offset the weight advantage of the slightly lighter and longer reaching 500II + TC.

Db

Db, you got that beautiful ibis real good, although the light and sky was quite hostile to BIF photography.

Not sure what you meant by "slightly lighter 400 II + 1.4xTC" ?
400 f/2.8 IS MkII is almost a pound heavier than 200-400L, and it feels that way too.

Maybe not for a capture but for those artists who love changing backgrounds it's ready to go instead of green screening you are white screening it.

Seriously very nice and I don't mind the white background my eyes are drawn only to the bird, there is no where else for my eyes to wonder.

OOPS, I was thinking 500II even with the 1.4x and its longer reach.

Thanks for catching this, Peter. I'll do some editing.

Forgot also to remind in the post that I am an advocate placing my hand at the foot of the lens.

Burningheart: Thanks. And yes, every gloom has its silver lining!!

It was sunny when I set out, but there was the June Gloom at the shore, as they say here.

As far as 200-400L acquisition goes, it's all academic at this time since the big stores have none, and no clue when is that they might get some. Apparently Aden Camera were told there was going to be a five month waiting period.

It's sounding disturbingly like the 24-70 deliveries last year

One race weekend down already. It will all be over by late August. If I don't get my 200-400 before August, I may as well cancel my order and let someone else move up the list. Then again, I may need keep my order open so I get one before racing season next year...

also i can hand hold the 600 ii all day, including hiking w/ it... so i do not see the 200-400 being a problem. it is a very sharp lens indeed. Canon has given it's users many excellent options.

DxO also has their results on the 5D3. I think these are included in the DPR review also. They rank the 70-200 II and Tamron 70-200 above it still. And it seems to drop way down their rankings with the 1.4TC in place. Then again, DxO lens reviews always seem a bit off the norm.
