On saturday I got up at 2am and headed to Minniwanka because of the prospect of northern lights. Alas I stood in the dark at 3am and did not find any northern lights.

Here are my best consolation pictures from when the sun came up.

Comments and feedback is appreciated.

Scott

1 Minniwanka in the Morning

2 Two Jack

3 Two Jack

4 Two Jack

Very nice color in the clouds and great reflections in the other shots. I guess in a perfect world nature would have allowed both at the same time, but so it goes. Something to consider when you're in a situation with great reflections and no clouds is to give over a good part of the frame to the lake bottom, thereby maximizing the foreground and minimizing the sky. There is just a hint of the lake bottom in #2, and it looks as though it might have really good potential for some foreground interest if we could see more of it. Just a thought.

Got some colour, but sunrise did not want too cooperate much with you. Happens quite often as we never know what mother nature is up to.

The reflections are nice, but I would like to see more detail brought out of the shadows. Right now they are too much silhouetted for my likings.

Phrasikleia: Good feedback. The sky needed some activity. Its hard to find the flat water with the interesting sky. I have some more detail in foreground that I cropped of lake bottom, I will check. Thanks for the detailed suggestions. Much appreciated. Scott

matthewh133: I think 3 came out best for having more interests. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

chez: Even a less than perfect photography sky on a blue sky day is a fantastic day. I have lots of detail in the trees I pushed down to emphasize the mountains and the dawn. I will look at a different processing. Thanks for the detailed suggestion. Much appreciated. Scott

These are fantastic. Scott now you have me second guessing myself that maybe I should have come out in early June with so much snow on Mt Rundle.

Are these from the picnic area?

I think I like 3 best, but 4 is a close second ...

Great series Scott,
My favorite is the first. The cloud colors look amazing and help balance your comp very nicely.

I like the dark shadows, draws the attention to the subject, #2 is the one I like most, I bet that would look nice on the wall.

3 is right beside the picnic table standing in the water.

It is very pretty now but:
1) June is our rainy month
2) Moraine Lake is not open yet - or it was not this weekend
3) Bow Lake still had ice on it last week
4) The trails aside from Minniwanka are mostly snowed in.
5) Common loons have not yet hatched the babies
6) Kananaskis highwood pass does not open to Jun 15

On the other hand:
1) Bears are low down and hungry
2) Moose calves will be just out
3) Dandelions are out so there will be black bears and more black bears.... on Kootenay Highway

There is no bad time.
Now = Bears, no hiking
July=Hiking, Wildlflowers
Aug=Best weather, hiking
September = Best Color

Fred Miranda: Glad you like 1. I stood in the dark for 3 hours waiting for this shot. It is a little stark but still pretty, in a simple way, I think. Thanks for the encouragment. Much appreciated. Scott

parsons: Sorry you will have to come and here it from me personally to get it - Min i wank a is the way I pronouce it. But I can not spell it so I could be wrong. Glad you like it. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Travis Rhoads: Thanks for the thoughts. The emphasis was what I was pursuing. Glad you like 2. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

David Leask: Glad you like them. Its a great day when you get bears and landscapes on the same day. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Hey Scott,

That's too bad you didn't get the Northern Lights. They could have looked super cool there with the lake. Of these, #2 is my favorite.

Scott, another great set of images, #3 is my favorite but they are all nice. I like the way you have processed these (2-4) i.e. less detail on the trees . I also think #3 would really rock as a b/w regards,
Dean

Jglaser757: You will enjoy the visit. It is a fantastic place. PM me if you need more advice. But these two spots are easy. You can almost shoot from your car. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.

harshaj1: The milky way was in the south and I was shooting north for northern lights at this hour. I considered milky way but the moon was way too bright this night. Two jack lake is a great spot for milky way thought. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

JimFox: This is an easy spot for me to get to - 1 hour from my house and an easy drive so its just a matter of time. Glad you like 2. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

CW100: I am glad you like the reflections. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Very nice series. My preference goes to the first three images. #3 has the best/more balanced composition IMO.
