On the way back from Grand View overlook at Canyonland NP, I saw this view to the west. It was raining hard so I got the truck into a good position and hand held a three shot sequence in burst mode for this blend out the window.

I could crop some off the top I suppose but this is uncropped.

I would not crop off the top. To me the sky and the overlook into Canyonlands are beautiful. If you crop, consider removing some of the foreground

I think the composition is excellent as is, and does not need a crop. If you were to crop the top, you'll lose how the cloud fills the upper left corner, and if you crop the bottom, you'll chop off the rock in the lower left. I think the flow is great as is, and I can almost smell the rain just by viewing this image.

Thanks guys. I was not going to crop but thought some might suggest it. I worked to get that foreground when I shot it.

Hey Ben,

I don't think there is anyway you could crop off anything from the foreground without the foreground feeling cut off and butchered... I do think you have something though in regards to cropping off from the top. While all of the clouds are cool at the top, they don't make the shot. Often the hardest thing to do when trying to balance a composition is to crop cool looking clouds out. But in this case, I would highly recommend it. As it is, your composition has a horizon that is dead center, and when I first looked at the shot, my eyes couldn't decide what half to look at and so it caused the shot to be uninteresting at first glance.

So, but cropping say the top 1/3rd of the sky off, you still have some cool clouds, you actually are left with a funnel of cyan sky that drops the eye right into the shot. I think it would be worth trying. Go to a pano crop...

Then... and I know it's raining, and your shot does have that wet look to it, for me, I think the foreground seems a bit blocked up in the shadows. I think if you opened up the shadows just a bit more, or say brightened it a bit more and added a hair of contrast, the foreground would gain depth. At this point to me, the foreground seems too flat with no depth. Perhaps, try that before cropping and see if the foreground than can carry the shot even with the unbalance between foreground and sky?

Ben, I favor your original composition. There is a symmetry to the darker sky area and the foreground that pleases this eye. The richness and variation in clouds seems to mirror the saturation in the desert terra firma and flora.

You are making that 5D3 really shine! If I might ask, what lens was used for this image. On a postcard or my wall it would bring a deep n wide

Cheers, great shot!

Thanks, the lens was the 16-35 Mk2, which has been a mainstay lens recently. The 24-70 mk2 is sharper at the overlap but not enough to make me change it unless I have lots of time. Using burst mode with live view focus allows me to hand hold (usually against some rest) and get a fast 3 shot bracket that can be blended later.

I miss the way the dark clouds reach the corner in the first one, but overall I think Jim was right, and I like the second one best.

Hi Ben
Really like it as is - I often favour 50/50 split if the scene warrants it - very different feel with crop for me. Brightness seems good on the ipad. You did a good job o catch this one!
My only surprise is you like the 16-35 - must have a better copy than I had! I believe it varies enormously...

Thanks Kelly CW100 and Lizzie.

I am also fine with centered images for my use. The 16-35 was uncentered when I got it, sent to Canon and they fixed it. Much better than my old 17-40 not quite up to my 17TSE but I don't mis focus as often with the 1635 as I do with the 17TSE.
