p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · FPJ Advice needed: First trip to the Beach

Hey Everyone!
For the 4th of July this year my family is meeting up in Myrtle Beach. This will be the first time my nephew ever sees the ocean. I know that shooting on the beach comes with it's own challenges, and I wanted to get some advice about capturing the moment. Most of my photography experience has been working for my college paper covering sporting events, aka, my camera lives in AI Servo and burst mode. Any advice would be great!

In case it helps
Gear:
Canon 40D
Sigma 17-50 2.8 EX
Canon 28-135 f3.5-5.6 (kit lens)

I also have a light stand, umbrella, and a Lumopro LP 160 manual flash.

I leave near the beach now so I plan to do a lot of practicing, just wanted to get the advice from those with more experience than me to help :-).

Hey there AAllen! I recommend just letting the day play out as if you didnt have a camera. This was a set I did for a client at their beach home: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1156269

What Chuck said. I wouldn't use a flash at all for this sort of thing. It gets in the way too much.

You need to know two exposures, full sun and backlit (usually three stops over that). Just switch back and forth depending on the angle etc, and you're golden. 17-50 should be more than enough.
