These firmware updates is going to be useless for 99% of the users because they just updated the addition of the use of the 800mm f/5.6E and nothing else.
How many of these users are going to buy the 800mm lens? How about the 28mm f/1.8G, 85mm f/1.8G and all the other new lenses?
Things like improve live view on the D700 (remove the double shutter activation), the blue color cast on the LCD and AWB are more important.
I think all these also applies to the D300/s too.
Generally there are minor tweaks to the software in addition to the "big" announcement. Sounds like another opportunity by Nikon to push the 800mm however. Wonder how many 800mm purchasers are still shooting with a D300.
There's a boatload of "tweaks" to the D700 update It takes ~ 2 minutes...
they could add 800mm compatibility in a few seconds. I focused in the dark with
my Sigma 35 A wide open and it was a marked improvement. I have no sympathy
for those who choose to keep their heads in the sand. I don't ask why now I'm
just enjoyin' the new ride on an old body.
I'm also interested to hear from D700 owners - does it break anything? Does it help anything? The 800mm lens compatibility is obviously not useful for many people, but as mentioned above if there are general tweaks that could be handy.
DO IT!!!!!!!! I went out today and my D700 did something it's never done in 5 yrs...
acted EXACTLY like my D3 (well, 8 fps vs. 9)

Nikon and old guys RULE!!!!!
Firmware releases are replacements, not upgrades. They replace the firmware on the camera, erasing the old one. The time it takes should be relative to the firmware size, not much else. It's not like it has a bunch of data to process during the upgrade.
