p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Thor's Well

Hi everyone.

Been in Oregon for a few weeks now. 30 days in this state is nowhere near enough time, but I'm trying my best to see what I can. I have been having some bad luck lately. I fried my 24mm ts-e and after getting it replaced, I had my tripod fall over with the new one on. It luckily survived at the expense of my hard grad, polarizer, and big stopper. I guess 8 months of travel I was bound to get bitten at some point.

Cape Perpetua sure did lift my spirits though. The coast there is intense and Thor's Well was a blast to shoot. I managed to catch it at sunset my last night there and I'm pretty sure I saw 1, possibly 2 5dmkiii's destroyed by a few huge explosions out of the well that soaked myself the other photographers there.

This is from the day prior after the constant rain we've been having let up for a few hours and made way for some beautiful backlit puffy clouds. Taken with the Samyang 14mm

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Have a great day everyone.

Jordan

Ps. I apologize ahead of time for posting only this one. I know it's a heavily photographed location but its the only photo from that area I have on my phone right now

Color balance seems off. Adding some more magenta to this image would help it alot. Also highlights are way to bright I would pull them back if you can. The comp, light and clouds are fantastic! Congrats on capturing this just needs a little tweak IMO.

Thanks, I did keep the color a bit cool on purpose but ill try and warm it up a bit and see how it looks. I'll check the highlights again. Editing on an 11" air and its tough to judge with the screen.

Hey Jordan,

Very cool shot, I like your composition. I think Brian has a good idea to add some magenta tint which is different than warming up the image. Still, very well done here.

Thanks for the help guys. I played around with it a bit and added some magenta and pulled the highlights back just slightly and it does look better. After I added the magenta and then took it back to where I had it the color definetely did look off. Sorry I can't repost the image, disadvantage of being a gypsy I guess thanks again for the feedback!

I said this elsewhere, but I'll say it again: this one makes Thor's Well look exciting again. It's easy to get numb after seeing too many photos of a location, but this shot manages to transcend the masses by a lot.

I'm sure this black hole has eaten a lot of expensive gear!
Very nice framing and post-processing. The bright cool tones set your image apart.

This shot really makes this place look powerful. Love how the water and cloud pop off the screen. What shutter speed did you use for this? Just perfect.

Thankyou very much everyone for the comments. Glad you guys enjoyed the image

For this particular shot it was a 1/4 second exposure. I varied exposure times slightly but found that speed the most pleasing. It was amazing how fast the water sucks back down into the well and back out to sea.

I don't think the highlights are too bright, the image does have a very cool tone to it, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I agree this comp and light are fabulous!!!! Great job on that.

Color balance is definitely way biased to a cyan/green. If that is the way you wanted it fine, but it does not look natural. I would straighten out white balance and then all three axis of color balance in Photoshop (on a calibrated monitor).

As far as the highlights. Yes they are a little hot. If you have the raw detail I would address those too. The best way I have found to deal with them (same way Ryan Dyar seems to) is to get them under control first, and then later if you allow them to clip a bit do it with a bit if diffused glow on purpose.

Lastly, I guess it is bound that everyone is going to call this place Thors Well even though it is not the name (that was a name of a photo taken of it that popularized the spot).

Hey Jordan,

By they way, I am glad you only lost your filters on the tripod falling. It was 2 years ago I lost my D700 and a 17-35mm when a wave surge tipped my tripod over down here in SoCal. It's a drag, but as you say, when we are out shooting as much as we do, accidents are bound to happen once in a while. I am glad your TSE survived.

Thanks everyone. Thanks for the great info Mark. Just a lot of techniques and tricks I'm just not aware of. Processing is definitely not my strong area but I'm getting better slowly. The diffused glow is a great idea. I'll finally be back home in a little over a month and I'll have to give this a rework on my on my good monitor. You guys have been a big help an I really appreciate all the input.

Jordan, love your shot, even the color bias. Looks very cool, creates supernatural look. Did not look hot on my monitor - so guess it depends on calibration.

Sasha.

Thanks Sasha, yeah, I'm torn. I keep going back and forth between processing results. I have 4 versions now haha. I'm just going to wait until I get home to settle on one. I might print this one out so I need to settle on something
