p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Antelope Flame

I followed up last night's Upper Antelope tour with Lionel Bigthumb with a private tour of Rattlesnake Canyon and then Upper Antelope.

Last year I was frustrated with the Upper Antelope crowd experience - using a in-town tour option. Today with Lionel, it was a completely different story. The crowds were still there - but he managed the crowds and situations very well - prepared us for upcoming shots, then cleared out the space.

This is a departure from the typical light beam shot in upper - more of a flame.

C&C welcome.

Great Shot. Really like the effect.

I have always felt that the Bigthumb crew was the best of the guide groups for a photographer, and wouldn't hit the major canyons with anyone else. The night shoot at the entrance to UAC with Lionel is simply fun, and that's hard to come by anymore.

Rattlesnake canyon is probably my favorite small canyon. Love the early morning lighting in there, especially if you go all the way in and then work back out as the light changes. No light beams, but the way the colors and shadows change is simply astounding. Having it "all to yourself" really makes it worthwhile, quiet, serene, the way God intended nature to be experienced.

later,

Gene

@Dirtyharry71 and harshaj1 - thanks!

@Genes Holm - couldn't agree more about the Bigthumb family - amazing difference from our experience last year. We also did Rattlesnake and loved it. Will post a shot from there later.

What a wonderful capture, It would be interesting to know how often the sun is just right to create this effect.

Was the "flame" done by tossing sand differently or was it done in post?

Nice image

What a cool looking shot. I really like the flame. Lionel has always seemed like a great guy when he has posted on here, when I decide to make a trip back to Antelope I know I will contact him for the tour. I will have to check out Rattlesnake Canyon, I haven't visited there, but it sounds like a great place to be.

@Fred - thank you very much!

@douter - I don't know how much of it was the sun angle vs the luck of the draw of the falling sand. Something I noticed this year vs last year is that most of the guides were carrying little scoops for throwing the sand instead of using their hands. The result was that the sand throwing was better targeted, and I got a LOT less on me and my gear. Having said that - someone with asthma should still stay out of there....

@kenyee - this was the same tossing of the sand - nothing added in post

@JimFox - Give it one more try with Lionel - just be sure to get him personally. He takes control of the entire canyon - makes a world of difference.

Nice pic - looks like a scene from Star Trek where someone has just been beamed by the transformer.

Really like your shot. Something different from most of other's.
I am wondering how Lionel Bigthumb can dictate all other crowds only for his clients?
Does he own the place? Just perplexed.

Yes...this is one of those almost overshot areas. KUDOS to you and getting something VERY new and unique from this popular photographic destination.

Awesome.
