The number of birds that are killed in the first few weeks of their lives is staggering. One day, you can see a pair of ducks with a dozen ducklings. One or two days later they only have two or three. The killers are mostly other birds: crows, ravens, hawks, falcons, owls, eagles. Then there are the mink, otters, cats, etc. I have seen an owl take a robin chick from a nest and a raven steal a heron egg. It is a tough world out there.

I don't know how many eggs or goslings this pair of Canada Geese had, but they now only have this one:

Not as staggering as fish egg mortality rate

I think you will agree, Nature seems to have its own way of keeping things in balance, too bad we are not so good at it

The strong survive in Nature, glad to see there is likely one to carry on

Cute too

Excellent photo!

A friend photographed a robin's nest, from an empty nest to 4 eggs to 4 babies to the momma's bring a worm, and to an upturned, empty nest. It was probably a coon o a 'possum.

I saw a Merganser with 10 chicks the other day and was wondering the same thing Tony.
I doubt if they will all survive because if they did there would be very many Mergansers here and they are not that plentiful. You got a lovely low angle and fine colours on this one!

I have watched the number of chicks dwindle time after time, but it's nature's way. A very nice shot Tony ~ Ron

It seems only Humanity has managed to change the odds. The rest of the world seems to struggle to survive.

Cute little one & I hope it makes it

Sweet shot Tony
