p.2 #3 · What would be minimum you're willing to take to a wedding?
What I bring with me is the minimum I'd be willing to shoot a wedding with.
2 FX bodies, 1 DX body, lenses ranging from 16mm fish, wide angle, primes, mid-range zooms, long lens, and 4 flashes with remote triggers, along with stands and modifiers.
I don't leave home without anything - except sometimes I forget to bring a nice hanger. That pisses me off.

This....i bring it ALL...a 35 and 85 alone?? Pschhhhh!!! What happens when you drop the 35!!? You're stuck on 85 the entire night?? No thanks, weddings are too important to NOT bring everything...

I noticed most of you guys bring 4 flashes. We have 2x 580ex + old brick vivitar for ocf.
I used to set up two strobes at the recep. and then got lazy i guess so mostly i'm ok with only one OCF and one on cam. that makes one extra/back up. Do I need another unit just in case or for other cool ideas? I will need to proof t o my wife that the expense is well worth it...(?)

No-no..probably he's got his back up in a car. We're talking about two things here.
1. What to bring. As long as I drive (and I drive an SUV) I can take plenty. Not that I will need it all, but I do bring extra clips, tapes, extension cords, even a chair or so.. + ALL OF THE BACK UP WE NEED! WE DO NEED A BACK UP!
2. What we walk all day long with? Away from the car. At the church, reception, locations, etc..
The second part is what I'm kinda learning how to pack better and/or just leave it a. at home b. at least have it in the car not ON ME ALL day long.

i have a 180 but rarely use it. 85 is seriously all I need. even in the church. i used to be forced to stay in the back of the church sometimes. but as i gained confidence and spoke up, i was able to break the rules and get closer. if there is the rare circumstance that i can not get closer, then I will pose as a guest and sit at an aisle seat and get closer. I let the bride and groom know beforehand and they are usually ok with it.

it's strict in here. we're staying back for the fear to be banned from the church... i use monopod though to handle 70-200 at 200 mm - extra item to carry...

I don't get it either. Maybe I *could* cropping heavily from the D800 but otherwise even 200mm sometimes isn't enough if I am stuck at the back of a big church: kiss and rings need a long lens unless you really want to risk an environmental shot of both these. 70-200 also gives more options rather than everything shot on the same FL.
Exc. backups I would probably be ok with a 50mm, 135mm, FX body, SB800 + stand + triggers. If it was raining (ie. must shoot groups indoors and dress indoors) I'd go 24-70mm and 135mm. With a D800 I might go 35mm rather than 50mm since I could crop heavily.

banned? wow you must have some real assholes that ruin it for the others in your area.
2 churches in PGH come to mind when you say banned. I was told in both that I must stay in the back. I politely said, "I know what I am doing. I've been doing this for years, but I appreciate your concern." Smiled and walked away. I did what I wanted, but with respect and reason. The minister and lady that told me to stay in the back both came up to me after and said how they did not even notice me up front and moving around. I was welcome to come back and shoot if thats how I was going to work.
Come on, I am 6'2" 265lbs. Not the hardest thing to miss

I use one body with 1 lens the majority of the day (D3s and 24-120). I need an sb700 for the reception and I like to shoot portraits with a 70-200. That's all I need.
I'd also bring a d3, d600, 28mm, 50mm, a 180mm and additional flash. My wife has her kit too, so we have plenty of backup. We recently got Think Tank Airport Navigator bags for the wedding day (sort of half-sized rollers with a top-loading option). If it doesn't fit in those 2 bags we don't bring it. I'm waiting on Fuji to see what they bring out this year and I may downsize further. All I carry on me is the d3s+24-120 in hand though.

I'm on the verge of becoming a minimalist again. After spending the past 2 years shooting with multiple formats and cameras I'm just wanting to show up with 2 5D3's and a 16-35 and 24-70 on each.

Do it! Dont let it hold you back.
I have a shoot this evening that I am going with my d600 and 50 1.8g. I know the area where we will be and know that I can do what I want and need with just that.

The worst ever moment of my photog career was after the ministers assistant saying they were fairly easy as long as I was discrete was having the minister stare at me and say "stay back!" in the middle of the ceremony after I quietly scooted (crouched!) just 4 steps into the aisle for the ring exchange. Luckily the couple were totally not bothered. Ever after this I am very very cautious.

Whenever I second shoot I only bring a 5Dii, 35L, 135L, and 580. That's all you need, in my opinion, to cover anything that comes your way. When I do primary the gear is quite a bit more extensive and if I feel like lighting the wedding or reception it grows even more...

Probably doing a lot of 35, 45, 70-200 or 85-135 this year. And probably the 24, because it's so awesome. Seriously thinking about leaving the 70-200 at home sometimes. One 5DIII and a classic close by.
