p.4 #1 · Chromed front ring on Zeiss lenses

I think this is case by case situation. For example, I hardly can imagine MP50 have any problem as its front element is well recess into body, and front element is relative small compare to other 50mm. I always have wild guess that is part of reason its high contrast, purer color compare to other 50mm in additional to well corrected optics.

Distangon 21, and 35 f1.4 could have problems, I did get flare from 35, but I don’t know if it is due to the ring. Big bubble front element with shallow hood is good recipe for that.

My experience with two old Leica Summicron led my attention for this, as I get pretty bad flare with 35cron V1, part of it from front silver ring (relatively big portion is silver) and other part is old coating. Less problem with 50cron. With BW black IR filer, I get noticeable improvement, since I didn’t change coating, I attribute that part of problem is from ring. Old coating is a lot more sensitive to this silver ring reflection. Then, this led me to believe, the effect is there, just how much effect extended for modern coating lens, I don’t know. For me, mostly a causal shooter, it may not be a problem, but for serious landscape shooter, I think this worth to pay attention to. The contrast, color degradation may be minor but could be significant for people do serious shooting.

Again, this problem is highly depended on the case:

1. Angle of light.
2. Hood design
3. Lens design (how is front element size, shape and positioned, focal length etc..)

I believe most people will shoot Zeiss ZF with hood, as they are supplied( not to mention their crappy cap), less so with ZM, as they are additional $100. So, I expect more complain from ZM than ZE/ZF, but on the other hand, ZM are usually with smaller element with modern coating.

All in all, my point is not difficult to understand this could lead a problem. The reason for Zeiss choose this chrome ring is unknown/unjustified to me.
