Taken in the middle of the day. No striking light and not technically perfect, but it's just such an incredibly beautiful place so I thought I'd share. Maybe my last shot uploaded before switching to the D800 after I was having some issues with the 17-40.

You are absolutely right - an incredibly beautiful place. Its a nice composition - and not bad at all for a middle of the day capture. Did you use a CP?

Thanks Dave. No CP or other filters.

Hey Matthew,

This could have been such a super shot...

Middle of the day or not, you really should have been using a polarizer to cut down the reflections, and you should have been exposing so that the highlights weren't blown. That is too beautiful of a location to have not gotten a really good shot. The blown water, and the hot clouds and snow make what could easily have been a super shot by simply exposing properly to a shot that I would have to say is subpar. Beautiful scenery can't make up for a shot being over or underexposed.

I hope that with the D800, when you are shooting landscapes, especially of water and snow, that you have added a polarizer to shoot with? And hopefully you learned your lesson about exposing correctly?

I don't want to seem to harsh coming down on you on this, but it's truly a shame to have had in your grasp such a beautiful shot, and then simply not have exposed for it correctly...

Jim

I to agree somewhat, what a great place to be. But, I wont be as harsh, a Polarizer would have really helped immensely ,,and I think there are too many "hot spots" in the photo(that was the first thing i noticed, maybe processing and bringing down all the highlights might help a little bit..

how far is lake victoria from banff? I will be in the area in a month!!

What were the issues you were having with the 17-40?

This lake is on the Opabin Trail which leaves from Lake O'Hara. Lake O'Hara is a little over an hour from Banff from memory. They only take 60 people by bus to Lake O'Hara daily to help conserve the area. You must book that in advance, and is probably sold out already. Thing is, you are aloud to hike the bus route if you can't get on the bus. From memory it was around a 2 hour walk. Leave early (around 7:30) and walk to O'Hara so you have enough time to then complete the Opabin trail and come back on the 5pm bus. You don't need a booking for the return bus. I'm not sure if the whole trail will be open at that time due to snow cover though. Judging by the amount of snow we saw still I doubt it, but it's worth checking out. Probably my favorite hike I've ever done.

Thanks for the comments all.

In regards to the issues with the 17-40. Mostly really soft edges, both on left and right, but especially bad on the left side.

We visited Lake O'Hara in September a few years ago. We had reservations, but there were a number of other photographers that showed up at the pick-up point that morning. They were allowed to take the places of anyone who cancelled their reservation or didn't show up. Even if the reservations are filled, it might be worth a chance to show up and see if you can get a spot. It snowed the night before we arrived and the mountains were covered in clouds. Who would have guessed the lakes were above the clouds and the entire area was a winter wonderland? Those who didn't show up missed some of the best shooting of our entire trip.
