I haven’t had the option to do much shooting for myself lately, which is both good and bad. Good because it means I’ve been busy which I’m not complaining about one bit! Bad, because I miss documenting my own children. Anyone who follows my work probably remembers a picture I took of my little Millie 2 years ago picking orange flowers at sunset. The golden light, the sweet little girl just doing her own thing…it’s become a very recognizable image of mine.
We were on a road trip recently and my husband pointed out into the distance and asked if I saw what he saw. I was like “No…what are you looking at?” “Don’t you see the orange out there?” All I saw was dirt to be honest. We live in the middle of the desert and I really did not see anything. He pointed again and finally, squinting, I could see a patch of something orange miles out in the middle of nowhere. I blew it off thinking it was probably just another color of dirt (we were in the middle of the dust bowl lol), but decided that it would be worth checking out later. The next day, we drove out to this spot again, found a dirt road that led to this mysterious ‘orange’ in the desert, and low and behold, there was a HUGE field of beautiful orange flowers. Out in the middle of nowhere, for no apparent reason, but I was in photographer’s heaven. Not only that, but these were the very same type of flowers I had taken my favorite picture of Millie in two years prior. Finding a field of flowers near where we live is the proverbial needle in the haystack. Anyone who lives here KNOWS I am not kidding.
Later that evening, I scooped up my 2 little girls and told them we were going to go pick flowers. They were beyond excited! It was a 30 minute drive and the entire way: “Are we almost there yet?” “Where are the flowers?” Their eyes just LIT UP when we arrived and they saw the sea of orange. Instead of attempting to get them to LOOK at me (like last time), I just released them and let them do what little girls do. Pick flowers. I haven’t finished editing these yet, but they are some of my very favorite images of my 2 little sweeties. I love my girls so much!
As a side note, their bouquets sat in a vase in the kitchen for about a week after this trip. We couldn’t let this beauty go to waste!
