p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Temecula Bar Mitzvah // Serious Uncle Bobbage

I take my Uncle Bobbing very seriously.

A month or so ago, my nephew had a bar mitzvah. I brought a wife, four kids, and 4 cameras , yeah I got issues. I spoke to the main dude, he was fine, and I made sure to never get in his way.

I would love to actually shoot these types of events though. Outdoor...Sunny... Nice venue...

Anyways here are the photos (many, as always). I'm discovering that the wider I shoot, the more I like what I get, I think in the future I'll be almost all wide besides for portraits (there are many here I feel would be much better if they included more of the surroundings).

As always C&C appreciated (keeping in mind that I was watching my kids most of the time )

Thanks for looking!!

Love these, Z. I don't have time for thorough comments but here are a few.

- I like how you included the photographers in a lot of these, normally I hear complaints about other togs in the shots, but some of these, it really adds, especially like in 5 with the framing, 10 with the cool shadow and the kinda celebrity being filmed feel.

- 11, I'm guessing a little bit of flash used here? Nice balance.

- cool action in 17

19a oh man, absolute win. And then I love how she's just dirty for the rest of the day

24a that lady is pretty stunning.

27 wonderful light.

29 - didn't quite get this one, I understand focusing on stuff in the BG, but barrels just didn't make sense to me.

30 - haha band having fun is cool.

32 - whoa, guessing maybe a little more flash, it really did something weird to the little girl's eyes to the right, kinda horror movie-ish.

45 - good ending.

One more comment - harsh sunlight? Not a problem for Zalmy, nice job buddy.

zalmy, pretty serious case of Uncle Bobbing here.

Really nice stuff in here, great job! The girl on the left in 37, you definitely need to set up a portrait session with her! too many faves to mention here!

Thanks guys!

David, I do like including them, they were part of the event after all.

11. No flash, just film awesomeness

29. I was using a point and shoot for those inside, the camera just did it's own thing.

32. yeah point and shoot still.

It's funny, I used to love cloud cover now I hope for sun. It's a bit harder (not much) and way more interesting.

great set as always Zalmy...

but what impresses me the most out of this entire set is the series of you photographing your kids getting absolutely filthy in the mud/dirt... most parents would be flipping out about their kids doing that.

This set has the typical Zalmy life/energy. Love it. With Uncle Bobs like this, who needs paid photographers?!

I've seen see photos by Uncle Bobs. You sir, are no Uncle Bob. These are outstanding.

On a side note... I didn't know there were Jewish people in Temecula!

I agree with Josh, I like that you let your kids be kids. The little girl playing in the mud was classic!

Josh (and manbox), I didn't even realize other parents would have an issue until it was pointed out later. They were having suc ha fun time. We even got the comment: "you kids are like poster children for fun" I like hearing that

Benee, as it turns out I could have been the main, but I wasn't sure if my kids would let.

Thanks Chi, Unce Bob's are allowed to be decent And there quite a few Jews in that area, mostly not observant or affiliated. My Brother in Law is the Rabbi there. Mostly outreach and teaching and such. He rocks.

Great set, plenty of great shots here! And you've done well shooting wider to include context.
- love the energy in 36

I'm curious why you used the P&S inside, IQ suffers a bit, bigger sensors normally work better than P&S in low light?

Really engaging series here. Your wide approach is excellent, not only in staying out of the way of the hired photographer, but you give us context they we'd never have any other way. Still you have some tighter shots that are very nice, and mean more to us as observers because you've established the scene so well. You processing is also really fitting.

I have to agree with one of the other posters. The girl on the left in # 37 is really attractive and we need to see more of her.

Thanks again guys!

Scott, I was shooting film, so a point and shoot has the same size sensor. The reason I was using it inside the automatic flash is just easier than using a big ole strobe. Where I screwed up was using expired film which has to be overexposed, but there is no option to adjust anything with it...

John, thanks, I'm seriously thinking of dumping the normal lens (the close ups) and just shooting wide, except for portraits.

If this was shot with expired film, the film must have been kept in a refrigerator or freezer. The colors look very good.

Yeah it was all expired, but not too much, mostly around 2009. I've shot a lot of expired film (though not much more than a decade), and as long as I overexposed, I've never had issues.
