p.1 #1 · D3S Light Meter lit in M and S dim in P and A
Hi,
I am not sure if my D3S has an issue or I set something incorrectly. When I look through the lens or press the info button on the back of the camera, I see the light meter in M and S modes but not in A and P mode.
Is this normal? I was also get the S mode to turn off by playing with the shutter speed. It almost seems like my D3S has some sort of threshold set.

That is exactly how it should work. No need to look on the back, the info is visible in the viewfinder. The metering indicator is needed when shooting (M) manually so you know when you have a proper (generally speaking) exposure. You will only see the meter in (S) shutter mode when you are underexposed or overexposure, which is a product of your selected shutter speed and the lens aperture. No need for a meter display in (A) aperture or (P) program because the camera will always give you the "proper" exposure.
This is the way it is with a D4 also.
BTW, if the camera can't find a combination that gets a proper exposure in A or P, then the camera can't get the shoot.

The meter doesn't shut off/become disabled on the d3s I just handled.
If you half press the shutter button it wakes up and displays the green bars in the right of viewfinder or the crappy white lines on the rear LCD if you hit info. This is in A,P,S or M mode.

I'm using the D4 and it only appears with S if you are under or over exposed and, of course in M. Doesn't appear in A or P. From my memory of the D3s, it works the same. Why would you need the a +/- meter when shooting in P or A? The camera should always keep you at the proper exposure.

Maybe there is some sub-menu item selected of which I'm not aware.
Hell, I decided to go to the manual and it only shows the meter in M. The S meter display is only a warning that your lens aperture range cannot support your shutter speed selection.

Ok that makes sense. I have noticed if the light gets too low I cannot take a shot in A mode.
