p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Family shoot gone awry...

Told my neighbor I would do some shots of the family for him. I have been wanting to try this genre out so I gladly accepted the opportunity. I laid down on the shutter button and took a zillion pictures as expressions and attention span changed. Funny part is, in all the photos, mom is smiling and focused throughout them all; dad and the boys are A.D.D. the whole time the whole way - head turned here, eyes over there, etc. DO what? oh! SQUIRREL!! What can I say?

These came out, though. Someone encouraged me to post them a few weeks back. Please feel free to let the C&C flow.

Thanks for having a look!

Crop #3 much tighter, and it would be my favorite from the set.

Seem a bit overexposed on a lot of them. But it's hard to avoid in direct sunlight. Good job.

Thanks for your input and taking time to comment. It was certainly harsh light and the family had a schedule to adhere to. I do like the 'bright'ish look as a style. I run down the hot spots in APerture until the perceived hotness goes away but several hot spots remained. Too much correction and the entire photo takes on an odd look. I haven't gotten any feedback from the family yet. I'm sure mom is displeased that the group ones didn't turn out; we'll have to try it again.

Thanks for looking!

Vinny

that's because they're over exposed.... it's hard shooting in harsh lighting, but a lot of your issues in this set look to be where you were shooting from in relation to the harsh sun.

I agree, it's tough shooting in harsh mid day sun - good pics considering the circumstances

Thanks everyone. It was about 0900 that we started but here in Florida that means plenty of light.

If any of you do this regularly, what would you suggest to the client that has the ideal place in mind and the ideal time? That's what happened here on this day.

For ADD men and boys. Well, yeah. Who isn't male and a little ADD at that age and time in the morning.

This is what I do. Take the same shot about 10 times whilst prompting them to look at the camera. And then swap heads in photoshop. Everyone is looking correctly in at least one shot. Mom is relieved and everyone thinks you are a genius for getting such a good shot of all over the map boys (including dad). The group shot is the one sent out to the family and put on the wall. Then a few singles are sprinkled around the house and family. If you have a classic group shot, the sunglass and other ADD singles are fine. This is who they are.

Shot a Mormon reception one time with about 20 teenage boys in a group shot. Wow. Tons of energy. Like the classic herding cats. Lots of photoshop work, but one good group shot.

Shoot photos, collect data and work it out in the digital darkroom. Crop to make shots look better. Get good bokeh on background. Everyone loves soft bokeh and shape subjects. Any shot can be improved and usable. Even awful can sometimes be made into art.

Thanks Ravi! I don't use photoshop but swapping heads would be fun
