p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · I think a keeper, and I think a throwaway

Hey guys. I'm very much on the fence with both of these, so general impressions would be very much appreciated

First, the presumed throwaway. I went to Phantom Falls, on North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve (near Chico, California) two weeks ago. The plans were formed during the heavy rainstorm about 1-1.5 months ago, which made me and my friends think the falls might still be flowing on the weekend of 4/20. Unfortunately, they were pretty darned dry. The only waterfall that was still flowing at all was the main attraction, Phantom Falls, pictured here. But man, it had really slowed to a dribble. The result was a pretty cool phenomenon, though. By the time the water neared the bottom, where the cliff gives way to the cave behind, the water had atomized into a fine mist, and the sun was at just the right angle to use the mist to create a rainbow. It was a unique site, so I thought you guys might like to see it, but I'm not positive the light and colors are good enough to label this a keeper. Thoughts?

Next, the presumed keeper (though I'm still very much on the fence). At the top of the cliff pictured in the above photograph, there were some really need succulent-esque wildflowers growing on the cliff. This little guy was all alone, with the intense sun setting him apart from the cliffs. My main qualm with image, though, is that the background might look like tree bark to the uninformed observer, not a cliff. The drama of this photo, to me, is dependent on it being clear that the background is indeed a cliff. I regret not taking some additional shots to make this a panorama, since the trees you can see on the left edge would definitely have made it clear it is a cliff, but oh well, lesson learned.

Thanks for looking!

Hey Matt,

I think #1 is a pretty cool shot, too bad about not having more water, but it's really cool how it turns to mist and gets rainbowized around the bottom...

As for #2, I think it works. I also think that for the viewer it doesn't make much difference at all whether it's a cliff or a tree. It certainly doesn't matter to me as the flower is set apart from the background (whatever it might be) very well. So I think you are putting to much emphasis on what the viewer recognizes the background is. As a viewer, it's the flower I am looking at, not the background. If I were to change anything, I might just crop off that bit of background green in the upper left, to make sure the background is a mystery to the viewer...

#1 Doesn't work for me. The light is too harsh and too flat.

#2 Nice shot. I saw immediately that it was a cliff.

I'm not too crazy about #2, the concept is good but there seems to be lens flare above and to the left of the flower.
Numbert 1 is interesting but I want to crop off the top of the cliff almost to the edge of the seep and I want to take off some of those boring trees at the bottom. The result emphasises the water and water process and that cool rainbow.

#2 can be stronger with a 20-25% crop in from left and down from top. JMTC
BTW: I like the shot

Thanks for the feedback, all. teuchter: thanks for the specifics. I actually have versions without the flare, but I liked it because I thought it drew more attention to the flower. schlotz: thank you for the specifics too. I actually have a photo taken in that crop too, but I liked this one because it emphasized that it was a cliff, in my mind. Either way, no matter... in the morning with a fresh eye, I don't think I'm going to keep either of these

Really like #2, and it will stand on its own even if you crop the top. #1 is really cool but maybe need to be posted smaller for people to appreciate it.

For me, they both would be keepers for the web, but neither would be wall hangers. Both are interesting in their own right and I like the bright colours the sunlight is painting your subjects with.

Matt,

The light in #1 looks pretty harsh and the PP looks crunchy (at least to me). The rainbow at the bottom is really cool, though. Perhaps cropping some off the top would help...?? I know you'd lose the bigger picture of the waterfall, but it's a really cool effect at the bottom.

#2 is nice. I like the simplicity, the splash of color, and the columns of rock OOF in the background.

I think perhaps some amount of cropping can make No. 1 work. The lower part is really a cool image. I like No. 2 also, but I find No. 1 to have more interest.
