Since there's always someone checking the performance of the Nikon Service Centers, I decided to add a data point.
Shipped two D800 bodies to Nikon Melville for a "left AF" calibration and check. Not sure that they actually had any left AF problems -- my images are pretty darn sharp and I'm happy -- but there's enough nervous people out there that I know it'll be easier to sell them if they've been checked out by Nikon. I'll verify any improvements with my FoCal software, too.
FedEx dropped off my box at Nikon Melville Service Center on 4/17. I received an estimate (for zero value) on 4/19. The two cameras left Nikon on 4/28 and appeared on my doorstep this morning via UPS Next-Day Air.
I just sent my D800 to Nikon Canada's service centre in Richmond, BC for the same problem (and my camera actually does have the left-AF problem) so fingers crossed, it comes back as quickly as yours did!
Cool from my dealing it depends on if they have the parts (or in your case they didn't need parts). IT seems like parts are the big factor. So newer stuff should be faster. My 400mm 2.8 AFSII has been sitting for a month waiting on parts .

After much angst, shipped my 500 f/4 off to Nikon Los Angeles. Shots not sharp/soft past 20 -30 feet. Bare lens hunts quite a bit for focus even on stationary subjects. Auto fine tune has not resolved the issues.
Also issue with it taking the 1.4 tc.
Can not get green focus dot confirmation with tc, nor can I get it to fine tune with tc
Spoke to Nikon service. They advised sounds like a lens issue. Send lens and tc , but do not send cameras (800 and 7000).
Hoping for a happy follow up post . Still a bit nervous about sending it in

I spoke to Nikon (Canada) service today, after they've had my D800 for a week... they said they haven't looked at it yet, but since it's only the Left-AF issue, it should "only" take a couple of weeks to get it serviced and shipped back to me.
