p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The most Evil kids you'll ever meet...

I haven't been shooting much, and I have been doing even less editing, I'm hoping that changes once I'm fully healed up... my wife requested some newer pictures of the kids to share with our families, so I took some around easter. I've already posted one of these, but not the rest....

First up, the eldest of the group. He's got style, he's got attitude and eyes that could melt an iceberg... Ladies and Gents, may I introduce Kingston!

Next up, the man we call Crash! He's a ball full of energy, a whirlwind of mischief, and one of the loviest kids you'll ever meet! Ladies and Gents, I give you Sol!

And last but not least, the bunny with the beautiful eyes, the heart melting smile, and chompers that could cut steel. Ladies and Gents, bring your hands together for Miss Moxie!

Really good stuff, Josh. What I like is that these are sorta like portraits, but they show the actual personalities of the kids.

that's always my goal... If their personalities don't show through I feel like I failed...

I set out to get some images that showed how "old" my oldest is, even though he's only 6. We've often said he's a wise old man trapped in a childs body.

Sustain: I definitely get the "old soul" feel from his expression and the shot. The expression strikes me as thoughtful and more mature than one would expect from a 6 year old. I think that choosing to have him in a tie (particularly a traditional repp striped tie) reinforces that impression. Generally good color choices to complement his skin tone and eyes. The rounding of his shoulder slightly implies a world-weariness. Having his square to the frame implies directness/honesty, which reinforces the guileless expression. The choice of cropping on the head is a controversial one among the traditionally-minded, but I believe it is becoming an acceptable visual cue to indicate proximity as a result of the frequent use of similar compositions during movie closeups. The fact that his shirt does not fit perfectly (the collar is a bit big on him) reminds us of his true age, so there is a still an element of "dressing up in dad's clothes." Technical aspects of the image are competently executed, and in particular the flat light across the fore of the face with strong catch-lights reinforces the theme of the shot.

Improve: While the rim-lighting is attractive, its strength and thickness (the width of the rim) is enough that it almost distracts rather than outlines. I would be tempted to tone it down .5-1 stop and/or move the lights a bit further behind to shrink the width a smidge. The tie is a strong pattern and the object of highest contrast in the frame, so it has a strong pull for my eye. I don't object to this entirely as the tie works as a thematic element in the shot, but I would be tempted at a minimum to go back and blur the bottom of the tie where it comes into focus. A slightly lower contrast in the tie might also help moderate the fine balance of the tie vs. the primary subject. I also feel that the strong and atypical green of the shirt pulls me, although I do like that you've gone for a complementary color to his skin tone. I might scale back the saturation in the green/aqua range a bit to suggest the color but keep me going back to his face.
