I like the idea, but I would try backing off and using a reflector or something else to get some softer light on the kids' faces. The light spot in the front (rope and shoe) from the flash is distracting. Good idea. Well worth another try.

yes, you need a softer light (and maybe a little less shoe!)

Don't mind the shoe, but I would make sure there's more separation between the child on left and the middle child.

i think the flash hitting the shoe and the rope is causing the issue. because these are brighter than the faces the eye is drawn to these details instead of what the photo is really about.

jack up your ISO, forget the flash, shadow recovery in post

or something like that. i think your overall composition is less of an issue than the use of light. think about controlling the viewer's eye, drawing them to what you want them to be looking at. the shoe and rope are great for context, because we know what these kids are doing, but they're not the subject of the photograph.

look at the way the bars on the left and right lead the eye to the faces in the background.

hell, try and fix this as it is. take it into 'shop and mask the rope and the foot and draw it down. see what you get
