p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Moab, Utah Scenery (Fall 2012)

Last fall my husband and I spent a couple of days in the Moab area visiting Arches National Park and Dead Horse Point before heading into Colorado. We had the best luck with photos the first day before wind and clouds started rolling in the next morning. That first night we successfully completed our first star time lapse! On the second day we fought the wind hiking out to Double O Arch. It was cloudy with sand blowing everywhere, not a great day for a classic Double O Arch photo but a good hike nonetheless. Below are a few images from our Moab visit. A compilation of our time lapses from the trip can be seen at

. Thanks for looking!

Gnarly Tree

Photo 2
Stars over Balanced Rock - My husband painted Balanced Rock with a CN-126 LED light. I took maybe 5-7 shots. This one turned out the best with the most favorable lighting on Balanced Rock. It's so nice being out in Arches National Park after dark. We saw two people during the 3 hours we were out in the dark: one at the Windows area and 1 leaving Balanced Rock as we arrived. I love not worrying about people in my landscape shots!
ISO 800, 14mm, f/2.8, 15sec

Photo 3
Dead Horse Point Sunrise - It was VERY cloudy when we arrived at Dead Horse Point about 40 minutes before sunrise. We stayed until about an hour after the sun rose hoping to get a peak of sun on the rocks below. No such luck. The clouds, however, were dramatic and made for a great sky!

September's usually a good time to visit with nice clear fall skies. But, you never know. The winds can make things brutal. Still, looks like some nice shots, with number two being my favorite.

Hey Steph,

Nice work on these, you did a really great job on #2, light painting evenly on objects is not easy. I also like #3, the clouds are very dramatic.

Beautiful series Steph and nice job with the light painting on #2. Enjoyed the time lapse video as well -- cool with the moving clouds against the night sky.

Nice capture of the dead horse point. I drove below the rim (see that trail in the photo). Wonderful experience.

Thanks everyone for the comments!

@JimFox and Tuan Le - I was pleasantly surprised at how well the CN-126 LED light we used did such a nice job. This image was also taken use that light to light up the foreground.

@c4change - Agreed! The roads that go down into that canyon are amazing! I went down to Musselman Arch a few years ago. The Shafer trail road is awesome!
