I do like your second picture, the composition is good although the background is kind of soft. First one seems to lack interest, and also a horizon is leaning on a left.

Hi Ian,

I agree that #2 is the better composition, but it is soft, and it's lacking in contrast. Take care of those things and #2 would be really nice.

It's better composition, but the shadows are too harsh, background is soft, and colors not as brilliant as they could be.

Your picture has enough dynamic range to pull out shadows without revealing noise, so you can easily adjust them by "shadows and highlights" tool. I prefer to convert to Lab color space and apply this tool only to L channel, this way, the color information stays undisturbed.

Your Exif data do not reveal your settings otherwise I would be able to tell you what needs to be changed in order to achieve better results. In general, try to shoot using hyperfocal distance; this way, your shot will be reasonably sharp all way through.

Another problem with your picture is this:
Color Space Uncalibrated
X-Resolution 300 dpi
Y-Resolution 300 dpi
For picture to look good on a web, you need to save it as sRGB, 72 dpi - and please sharpen it after resizing.
Also, there is "Critique" FM forum where you can get a bunch of specific advice on composition, settings and post processing.

Alatoo that makes no sense. A picture 1024 pixels across is the same size on the web irrespective of the dpi it is saved as. Also, it needs sharpening according to my taste. Colour is also subjective. This is Scottish light, not the harsh glare of Arizona.

The 3rd image is nice, you've captured the Scottish light and the colours look good and natural, saturated but not overly so. If it was me I'd have tried for a simpler foreground as it feels a bit busy. The dark shadows don't bother me, it's what I'd expect from an image taken in this kind of light (I'm guessing late morning).

The first two don't really do much for me I'm afraid, The first one has some nice light but the composition doesn't appeal, maybe I just don't like pictures of dinghies I remember that Loch Loyne viewpoint from the days before people started to deface it with piles of rock, why do people feel the need to make a mark on the landscape?

Paul.
