Interesting thread! I definitely got where the OP was coming from with his post, and hope to have a small cam to take with me when we go on vacation this July. I enjoy my D700, but don't want to lug it about on a cruise ship, you know?

Totally understand the OPs point on this. I too had an XE-1 and I could have easily lived with it as my sole camera. The camera did feel like a toy and I sometimes wished it had a more solid feel, but then again, we'd all complain that it is too heavy. I sold my XE-1 and went back to my D700 and also bought a F6 film SLR to go along with my nice lenses. I still like the controls of a DSLR compared to the mirrorless cameras, but for traveling light on vacations, the XE-1 was THE camera to have!!!

Never said the D800 was a bad camera but you are about three weeks to late. D800 and almost all of my Nikon gear is sold. One lens left to offload and there's no looking back. My days with a DSLR are over.

Yeah, this thread has been pretty mindless. Hard to believe it is still going. Reading this fanboyisms makes one feel like they are at DPR instead of FM. Definitely a notch down.

You never should have purchased a D800.

It's kind of like when someone buys a giant six wheel truck then tries a Camry and decides, woah wait, the Camry makes a lot more sense for me.

The D800 is obviously the superior imaging device if quality and professional flexibility matters. For a vacation photo enthusiast who shoots in A mode, taking a few forgettable snaps, any larger sensor camera will honestly do.
