I just finished taking the photo, but the nebula has been out there for a long, long time. The only advantage of astrophotography over "normal" photography is that the objects out there change very, very slowly. A "star forming" region is an area of relatively dense concentration of (principally) hydrogen gas; gravity causes the gas to "congeal" into stars, but that process takes a long, long time. I suspect our children's children's children could take substantially the same photo.
