p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Running Chicken Nebula

Hi,

This is Running Chicken Nebula, IC2948: This is a two-panel mosaic of this large emission nebula/star-forming region; it's not clear to me why this nebula has the name it does, since it doesn't look at all like a "running chicken" to me. The red color of the nebulae is a result of the hydrogen gas surrounding the bright new stars being ionized by the stars. IC2948 is the main nebula; IC2944 generally is said to be the star cluster inside IC2948, but that's not entirely clear; Lambda Centauri is a bright (mag 3) star not associated with the nebula (it's much closer to us than the nebula); GUM 39, Gum 41 and IC2872 are associated emission nebulae; NGC3766, IC2714 and Melotte 105 are star clusters in the field (but not associated with the nebulae); a nice little (literally) bonus is the tiny planetary nebula PK294-0.1 (tiny red circle just to the left of the nebula). the small (a light year or so acroos) dark lumps in the nebula are "Bok Globule," although these particular Bok Globules are called "Thackery Gobules" after the man who discovered these particular Bok Globules. This beautiful nebula is very close to the spectacular Eta Carinae Nebula. Estimates of its distance from Earth vary, but tend to be around 6000 light years; This field is perhaps 100 light years across.

It contains almost 40 hour of total exposure.

Great work, I definitely see the running chicken. Wings are back, head is far stretched forward!

repost this image in the astronomy thread, help keep it alive!

Very nice. amazing how much work goes into this.
how much processing time in addition. I imagine a fair amount.

I don't know exactly how much time I spent processing the data, but it was many hours. This one was more complicated than most, because I had to make sure the two parts would stitch together seamlessly.

Thanks, guys.

All information any sane person might want regarding the image (and its acquisition and processing) are at
http://www.de-regt.com/Astronomy/Chicken.htm. There are a variety presentations, as well as a version with all the objects labeled.

Wow, That's a stunning shot of an unfamiliar target (at least for me). Thanks for the link to the details. I have a similar set-up, but image locally (through 3nm Astrodons). It must be great to image from such a great location in the Southern Hemisphere.

Thanks for sharing,

Eric

Mark, Another mind bending image. Hope things are going well, saw you've been traveling a bit lately. Some very nice shots coming from all over the place. Well done, spring is here. We've got to get out shooting together soon. Rick

Yes, Eric, I very much enjoy imaging from such dark skies. I would prefer to image from my own yard, and for the amount I pay for the privilege of imaging from the Australia desert I certainly could build a nice dome in my fairly-rural yard. But I live near Seattle, and the perma-cloud layer makes imaging here an exercise in frustration.

Rick, I would love to shoot together; I went out a couple of weekends ago, when we had our spate of good weather, with my wife, but didn't find much.

Hey Mark,

What a really cool looking shot. You did a great job with capturing this. As for the name, I sure don't get it. Someone was sure very creative with the naming. I can see lot's of things in this shot, but a running chicken? Not so much.

Wonderful image, I would never have the patience or the know how for such an excellent capture.
I couldn't see the running chicken until I looked at these bottom right. running chicken
I think the middle image, 3rd row is the right colour.
very clear now.

Thanks, Jim.

And thanks for the laugh, Sparrks!

If you ignore the two blobs above the main nebula, and if you ignore the lack of "legs," you can convince yourself that what's left is a running chicken (running without legs...). Wings flapping, head out front. But I think it takes the same kind of imagination to "see" that as it takes for most of the constellations.
