Well, I've been playing with it a bit - took some before and after shots with same camera. What I did notice was in some difficult lighting (our workstations are a lighting torture test with mixed halogen spots and fluorescent floods) where auto white balance has always been a problem the post-firmware D4 is spot on. Never had a camera able to do that before, including the D4 pre firmware upgrade.
Otherwise, the in-camera jpgs are more contrasty without blowing out anything, which the histogram confirms. It definitely looks nicer. I'm not sure I'd call it "sharper and more 3 dimensional" myself, but that probably sounds a lot more impressive than "improved white balance and contrast".
But it really is better, the difference is quite apparent.

Wait, you guys didn't get your 800mm in the box along with the D800? Nikon sent one as a gift for delaying shipping on my D800 by a few hours. I thought everyone had one....

New to Nikon, can someone tell me if the most current firmware update includes ALL previous updates? Or, do I need to install each update from the beginning? Thx!

Just the latest one. Put on the top directory of your card, put the card in the camera, update firmware. Simple.

Can't wait to see what a 3d image looks like from my d4. The wb was already pretty good, but if that sample above is an indication, I guess it just got better.

Unfortunately it's the old style 3d so everything is red and blue.

Wow, I hope this update helps me determine which of my three new 800/5.6 lenses is sharpest. I'll just let the other two sit on the shelf and collect dust or better still use them as wheel chocks for my boat trailer (They are water resistant aren't they?)

Ran a few thru the D800, AF tracking in marginal light appears improved as well as the Auto WB. I'll let
it eat thru a few cards and report back, sans any possible live view/video bennies. Homie don't do dat stuff.
