Thank you kindly BeeBalm, Mike, Chris, Todd, Socrate, Ron, Randy and Paul.
Because true seals can't tuck their hind flippers under themselves, they can't "walk" the way sea lions can. Sandy, remote beaches are perfect- but the edges of Prince William Sound have few (if any) sandy beaches, so anything that's flat, low and fairly near their food source is okay with them. Resting isn't a long-term stop anyway.
In this case, the small iceberg was perfect for Mom resting with her babe.
Our captain knew how close he could take his 100-foot boat to the seal without causing it to dive into the water- and he figured right. Although a bit nervous, the mother didn't panic, and we passed without incident.
With the boat moving between 5-10 mph and me using my 70-210 zoom, I was able to get a composition I liked. Since I seldom aspire to taking close-up portraits of animals anyway, I didn't use the 400mm lens.
