As I go through my recent trip images, I'm jumping all over the place......Another from our recent visit to Hawaii and the Lava Boat Tour. Well before the sun has risen, the colours were amazing, and you can see how close we got. I was shooting with my 24-105. By the time the boat left this location and headed back to the dock some 45 minutes away (let me tell you, that was a wild ride!) the sun had risen and the light was totally different, but still great to work with.

You did a great job of stopping the action while shooting in that low light. Really looks like some kind of giant witches' caldron. Great colors!

Thanks Helen, David and Dave, it was quite a challenge when we got there as the boat was rocking all over the place. One thing I quickly worked out was to roll with the boat and when it reached the top of each roll to shoot at that split second of stability.

Hey Andrew,

What a cool shot you got here. I would like to do that one of these days. So you must have shot handheld with VR turned on at a faster shutter speed?

Great shot! Were you able to be close enough the whole time to use your 24-105 or did you change out lenses? I bet you were feeling the heat!

Jim, Mike....when I arrived it was very dark and I was shooting around 2400ISO but gradually dropped this back as the light improved. All were shot handheld, there is no way you could even consider a tripod and the 24-105 gave me a good range for a variety of shots. It would have been quite a battle to change lenses (as well as the missed time whilst doing so). And yes, we were really feeling the heat - can't recommend this trip highly enough! You may get better opportunities on one of the more personal boat tours but I would imagine that the cost would be very high.

That looks totally wild Andrew. Pretty cool reflected colors and wave action. I'll definitely have to look into the boat tour when I make it out to the big island.

Andrew you're killing me. I'm dying to get there and see this! I've got it all mapped out. I hope there is some great action when I finally free up. I've got your recommendations all bookmarked for the boat trips.

Oh, this and your last lava pic are both just incredible images. Just fantastic compositions and everything. Well done.
