Just went through these.The funny thing about the d7100 is that out of camera images from a d90 or D300s look great and the d7100 SOOC look dull.But the d7100 has so much detail that you can pull out.Dark rainy,snowy day

I found the same thing. I think they may have tweaked the active D lighting algorithm. I ran at Normal in my D300 but find that Low or Off and manually set the contrast gives better results on the 7100. Try it, see what you think.
It has more to do with the dynamic range and resolution.Larger pixels have more contrast between them.But if you crop they fall apart.. Alot of 8mp images sooc camera have more punch then a 16 mp if the picture has no detail.Not an algorithm
