Spent the afternoon playing at the local 1/8 mile drag strip with a D7100 and the new AFS VR 80-400mm. I replaced a Canon 7D and 100-400mm with the Nikon combo (the rest of my kit is Nikon so it made sense - at least that's what I told my better half!). These are quite heavily cropped, not having track side access means getting the angles right can be challenging.

How are you finding the buffer? I used to shoot a lot of racing, and found sometimes a sizable buffer was a life saver...I haven't seen any discussion on the buffer since it came out.
Shot these this evening of my son playing soccer. Used 1.3x crop mode with the 85 1.8G. Then did some more cropping on the computer. WOW there is crazy detail for me to be able to crop like this and get a sharp pic. I can not wait to use this at this weeks wedding.
Heres a couple the first was off on the af tuning, but 9 pt dynamic still did pretty good. The other image is fine tuned correctly. A long focal length is not the easiest to tune, but that's part of the fun. Very little sharpening with a 10,10,4 edge mask.
