The new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens will be offered as a Kit for the just released Rebel EOS T5i and Rebel SL1 DSLRs. It is designed to take full advantage of DSLRs with Hybrid AF systems.

And the nonrotating front element. Took them 10 years to figure that out.
It's a kit lens. How many kit lens owners care about this?

1 UD element . That's new isnt it?
The aspheric element of the previous version was doing well. I wonder why the switch.
Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I imagine that quite a few people on budget would put the money into accessories such as tripods and polarizers, not into lenses. For whoever wants to use a polarizer, the rotating front threads must have been a source of untold annoyance.
Are these two mutually exclusive? I believe they serve different purposes.

Yeah...seems promising. I just got my fiancée a T4i kit with the 18-55 IS II, but depending on how this new one performs, maybe I'll sell the "old" lens and get this one. Quieter AF would be nice, as would the non-rotating front. We shall see...

It's $250.....
it wont be that
i can only go by what i see here but :
the old one had an RRP of £199 and sold for about £130
the new one has an RRP of £239 (not discounted yet as its only pre order)
and as a kit lens when bundled with a 700D its £130 (diff between body only and with lens) .
the old one as a 650D kit was £100 although now the 650D with kit lens has been discounted more than the body only now so the old lens is now only £60 as part of the 650D kit
I would guess that when the new STM actually is in the shops its will be had for about £150-£160
