p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Testing 400 2.8 IS

I posted a question in the Canon board about supplementing my 600 f4 IS with a 400 2.8 IS as a secondary/flight lens. I had a chance to shoot the lens a few times over the past several days. Thus far, my experience is that on my 1Ds2, the lens is absolutely tack sharp wide open, and the same can be said with a 1.4X TCII wide open. On my 7D, it's not quite as sharp at the pixel level as it is on the 1Ds2, but it still seems slightly better than my 600. These experiences seem to mirror my experiences with the 600.

C&C welcome

Here are a few shots:

Dark-eyed Junco 7D, f/2.8, ISO 400, 1/500, tripod mounted. I probably would have been shooting at ISO 1600, f/5.6 on my 600.

Northern Saw-whet Owl (slightly obstructed, but hey, what can you do) 7D f/2.8, 1/80, ISO 100, tripod mounted

The owl photo is wonderful. the first looks like you ran it through noise reduction and it stole feather detail. The last is much better.

Fantastic detail, Ryan; the Carolina Wren is my favorite.

I'm not so sure I agree with Morris on #1; the head looks pretty sharp, and I wonder of the apparent loss of feather detail is just DOF or a bit of localized motion blur.

Too bad you couldn't get any closer to the owl.

Thanks for the comment on the detail in the Junco, morris. I'll have to look back at my settings in Lightroom. I probably did a tad bit of noise reduction, but I don't remember for sure.

All of these are more than exceptionally sharp and each would enlarge quite well if you were so inclined. Great lens. FYI the 200-400 is supposed to be as sharp or sharper; if it ever comes out! Don

1 and 3 are just terrific Ryan, with my favorite being the Dark-eyed Junco.
Excellent work with an obviously very sweet lens.

2 is my pick for the super detail Ryan. 3 is extra nice too. I like 1, but something about it just doesn't look quite right, but I can't put my finger on it ~ Ron
