I shot the 4A and 5A boys and girls Final Four and State Championship this past Thursday through Saturday at the Coors Events Center at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Normally when I shoot the Buffs games there I am shooting at ISO 2500 to get 1/800th of a second at f2.8. But, because I got to know some of the staff, I asked the arena manager about strobes for the high school final 4 right before one of the Buffs last games. He said I could put them in the catwalks as long as I had them secured with safety cables. So, games started on Thursday at 4pm. I headed up to Boulder way early to get in by 10am when no one would be on the court. I was shooting this for Maxpreps, and before I got here, not only did no one for Maxpreps strobe these games, no one could sell, the images could only be for editorial use. This year we could sell. I met FM member and fellow Maxpreps shooter Mark (mdalby) at the arena. Originally he thought about setting up a couple strobes, but decided to just help me set mine up to see how I did it... It was great having him there because climbing up a ladder 4 times carrying a strobe was not going to be fun. It took about an hour to set them up. I went home, but had to be back an hour before the doors opened to turn on my pocket wizards. The first night, the light was great, but they were not pointed that great...I got mid court lit perfectly, but the baselines and sidelines we not lit too well. So Friday I repointed them and was real happy.
With the strobes I was getting 1/250th shutter speeds at f4.5 at ISO 200. Ahhhhh.......
Here are two shots from the two boys finals. The first shot is from the Lewis-Palmer and Valor Christian game. One of the kids from Valor is Christian McCaffrey, the son of former NFL great Ed McCaffrey and is considered one of the top high school athletes in the state. Unfortunately, he might be the top athlete, but not the top basketball player, and Valor lost to last years state 4A champion Lewis-Palmer. The first pic bellow is of Senior Jordan Scott (brother of CU Buffs freshman Josh Scott) dunking.

The second shot was one of my favorite shots from the tournament, but in reality, he missed the dunk. But it looks cool. Denver East (team in white) was the favorite, but fell apart and the Eaglecrest Raptors took them apart. The photo below shows Raptors senior Rayjon Craig (1) attempting to dunk over Denver East Angels junior Ronnie Harrell (25). Definitely a rough game. Only final that the cops were brought in to keep fans apart when the game was coming to an end.
