p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · How about Page, AZ this Fall?

My Fall photo travel to Zion and Bryce Canyon is coming up for 10/11-10/19/13. I would like to extend my travel to include Page, AZ area looking for ever-photographed by many-Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon, both Upper and Lower. I would like to spend 10/19 afternoon until 10/21 night, then drive back to St. George on 10/22 to fly back home.

Zion and Bryce are covered pretty much but I have no idea as to Page, AZ area shots. This would be my first travel to that area.

I would be most thankful if any of you give me all the resourceful information as to how to get there, what time of the day to shoot, what kind of permit and/or guide to the Antelope, especially. Of course any reasonable lodging information is needed and appreciated.

Another important request is if any of you are planning to go there around the same time, I would like to participate or join the group. Being a solo traveler, I am more and more scared to go around to shoot in the dark - before sunrise and after sunset, etc.. So if interested, please PM me and we can form a group.

Again.. my travel time around Page, AZ is 10/19-10/21. I will be coming from Bryce Canyon on 10/19.

Thanks,

Kee

As people always say, sunset is the best time to shoot. For the desert, this really can't be understated. There aren't many good photo opportunities under the bright sun, as shadows are extremely harsh.

In the fall, you will have a perfect view of the Milky Way. Use it to your advantage if you are interested. It is incredibly dark out there, and you should be able to get amazing photos of it.

I don't know if you already have a plan for Lake Powell, but if you can kayak it, do so. There are tons of nooks in the canyon walls that are great for bouncing light. Morning would be opportune for that.

IMO the way to go about this, is to take all your photos in the Golden Hour. Take long exposures if you can, because it really is stunning up there.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Don't be afraid of the dark, if it is because of wildlife. Your chance of having an encounter with it is next to nothing. I've lived here for years, gone out and shot the Milky Way in the middle of the desert, and at most, I've seen a Coyote. It was so scared that when I shined the flashlight at it, it wimpered and ran away very fast.

Spiders aren't a very prominent thing outside of rivers and whatnot. I've never seen a rattlesnake either. Don't let animals prevent you from getting shots. Just always bring a flashlight and a GPS.

You will certainly miss the best shots if you aren't out at those times.

Use the Search Engine for this forum for Page, Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon, and Horseshoe Bend.

In this area your biggest issue (and the real reason to go with someone daytime or night) is twisting an ankle, not wildlife (almost none) or people issues (almost none).

Horseshoe Bend is a classic shot as long as there are a few clouds in the area, but is an EARLY morning, sun at your back, setup. An easy stroll of less than 3/4 mile on sand and sandstone, but plan on being in place at least 45 minutes before sunrise. Digital time exposures are your friend here for color saturation.

Check out the previous posts over the past couple years, you will gets lots of ideas.

Upper Antelope requires a guide, get the "photographer's tour". Lower used to allow you to tour on your own if you have a tripod (a must, anyway). Not sure of current rules. Horseshoe Bend can be great at either sunrise or sunset, depending on conditions.

Depending on driving distance you are willing to do, and the type of vehicle, there are dozens (hundreds?) of good places nearby. The Rimrock Hoodoos (Toadstools) are close. So is Stud Horse Point. Wahweap Hoodoos also close, requires longer hike. Paria Valley or Cottonwood Canyon make good, scenic drives. Coyote Buttes North (The Wave) and South are not far. North requires a permit, not easy at times. Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch are fun and scenic. Use Google to get more details.

Thanks Brock Whittaker. Milky Way shot during my Fall photo travel sounds really tempting especially Bryce Canyon. I definitely will try that. Also thanks for the comforting words about darkness. I will have to be careful with some careful planning.

Hello Gene, You are absolutely right. This site is great with wonderful pictures and wealth of information. It is nice to know that I don't need a long hike to get to the Horseshoe Bend. Will try sunrise shot there. As to the Antelopes.. I am searching for the tour group/guide. That will be interesting and safe as well.

Dear Stan, I think you have traveled extensively when I look at your blog. Your advice on places nearby Page, AZ is greatly appreciated. I am checking and checking...

Thanks,

Kee

Antelope Canyons are not dangerous as soon as you wear good shoes, are reasonably fit, and do not perform acrobatic tricks on stairs. Upper requires a guide, photo tour is extra. If you can afford it, there are now night tours in the Upper. Lower will give you 2-hr photo pass for the regular entrance fee, as soon as you have professional-looking camera. There are also a bunch of slot canyons in the area - once, I met there an old guy whos hobby was locating slot canyons along 89.
Hiking to Wahweap hoodoos does not require a permit, but having a high clearance car will shorten your hike. Hike is easy, as soon as you know where to go. Best time is sunrise and dusk, so it makes sense to camp there. It's about 5 miles one way.
Driving to Alstrom Point requires high clearance but not hard. Nipple Bench is a beauty of its own. Overall, the area is amazing.
I usually stay in Quality Inn, it is reasonably priced, clean large rooms with lake view, breakfast included.

Hello Aleksandra, I really appreciate it very much for the valuable information. It sure looks like Page, AZ has so many interesting places to visit.
- Coming from Bryce Canyon after a sunrise shooting there, I should be able to arrive Page, AZ around 1 pm. Perhaps I will go to Horseshoe Bend for sunset and night painting.
- The next whole day will be dedicated to Antelope Canyons, hopefully North and South. I am considering carol/Lionel Bigthumb photo guides to register. Glad to know that South doesn't require a guide only permit. I will act very well to look like a serious photographer
- Then on the day to fly back home... I can do the sunrise shooting for HSB..hope so!!

Thanks for the lodging information as well. After a sunrise shot.. I will devour all the food they provide... -Kee

Hi Kee, just got back from there....make sure when you visit Horseshoe Bend that you explore right around the edges...most people set up in a very similar location but if you wander both ways you can get some great images. Also we visited the Toadstools and had some great conditions there, and a very easy hike to get to from the parking area on the highway. Everywhere you drive you will see things worth photographing....might be a good idea to look for something unique!
cheers Andrew
