I spent a week planning this shot. Thinking about it kept me awake at night. In the end, it was worth it. I've very happy with how it turned out.

I really like this picture but I have a question. How is it that the moon is so large at 160mm with a full frame camera?

I double checked my exif data, it is indeed 160mm. The moon does look huge though.

With the help of Google Maps satellite imagery and The Photographer's Ephemeris app, I found a location on the east side of the Las Vegas valley, higher in elevation so the mountains wouldn't block the shot.

TPE helped me figure out where the moon and sun would set, so I knew the general area that I wanted to be at.
I spent last Sunday driving around for a couple hours looking for right place. I went back Sunday evening to make some test shots and figure out the framing.

Tuesday night is when I took the photo of the Moon and comet. I used the brightly lit Charleston Blvd to lead the eye from the lower right up to the comet and Moon. Ideally, I should have been a little bit more north of the location, but the residents there probably wouldn't appreciate me in their backyard
