On a busy street, the child is offering a donation to the monk for his monastery.
Although this may look like begging, it is not. It is part of the culture whereby monasteries use this method to get money for their needs.
The mother is letting her daughter participate- and thereby learn. Knowing something about the Japanese, I'm sure it was also explained to the girl so that the tradition would be carried on with her generation.

Nice capture Charlie, I wonder how it would look if the coin/s were caught broadside between the child's hand and the cup.

Thanks Douglas, Dein and Steady.

I have a fast trigger finger- but not THAT fast.
And I love side and back light- even though they can be problematic.
As you know, Steady- I'm mostly a documentary shooter, and words often help.
