My 10 yr old has shown an interest in photography and I have agreed to get him his own camera. I used to have a t3i that he has used, but sold that not too long ago. He's also used my NEX gear, but said the he'd like a DSLR. I'll be buying used and would like to get him a Canon so he can use my lenses (when I let him). I'm struggling, however, with what to get, especially with used XXD bodies going so cheaply now. He may prefer (for now) the smaller rebel body, and might like the video capability of the newer rebels if I can find one in my price bracket.
I'd be interested in hearing what others considering this have done. Thanks
The XSI is small and light weight. If broken or lost you won't lose a lot and yet it has all the features he needs to learn, produces very nice pictures and gives room for him to grow in knowledge. Any of the early Rebels would be a good choice.
I'd stick with an earlier Rebel, these are also pretty cheap if you buy used, and they are small and light, and you're more likely to find video capability in your price bracket
I think the XXD bodies are too big and heavy for a 10yo (but if he gets a chance to handle one he might decide he likes it). If you want video capability you'll need the 60D (I don't think the 50D has video). I've never needed video, but that's just me.
i also like the rebel series for the hands of a 10y/o. I'd recommend one with video and live view so he can learn how to use those features over time. That's why i recommend the t1i
T4i with 18-135 STM, add the 40 f2.8 pancake...maybe the 270ex II flash and grip for xmas.
Why, the T4i has a touch screen like his phone/tablet, the 40mm is for you

what is your current gear? are you shooting crop or full frame? if you are shooting full frame, get on one of the deal from ebay, t4i, 18-55, 55-250 fro 699 I think. If you already have cropped camera and lenses, then get a t2i for around 300. the new prices bundled with lenses are so cheap now though that its worth consideration
I've got a nice kit, including a 5d2, 7d and a full complement of compatible lenses. I'd prefer not to go through the hassle of selling off extra lenses to cut costs or to worry that he's destroy a $500 camera (though it's unlikely).
t1i. T2i if you can find a great deal. Video for a 10 year old is going to be a fairly cool addition. If he has 0 interest in video, the xsi is a great camera too. 10 year old hands don't need a 30 or 40d.
For a 10 year that is starting to show interest in photography i would buy the lowest priced of those options. He/you can always upgraade it in a couple of years if still haviing this interst.
Thanks for the thoughts, they helped me in my decision. As much as I leaned towards a used 40d (which was my camera of choice for years), I think a smaller body will suit him better, so I just picked up a t1i off buy/sell... I would have gone even cheaper, but I think he will appreciate the video option.
