The first of 5 home meets of this season was a quad meet with Southern Utah University, West Virginia and Oregon State. Utah won with a team score of 196.95, and there was another nice crowd--14,917. Still figuring out some things, but all in all, it was a good night. Here are 12 shots out of about 1,800 for C&C; a slightly different gallery HERE.

Russ,
Great shots. I love #1 and 11 in particular. I've noticed that you position yourself differently for beam than most people I've seen locally who setup off one end or the other. You're getting some great shots by doing it.
If you don't mind my asking, how tightly is a shot like #1 framed in camera? With the movement I always seem to have to frame pretty wide or I'm cutting off limbs all over the place. I'll crop in later but at the expense of some resolution which is noticble given the high ISOs involved.

Beautiful set Russ. I'll vote for #'s 1,4, and 12 as well as 1 and 2 in the gallery, based on the higher degree of difficulty in obtaining such shots. That vault shot of Taylor is fantastic. Congrats on the victory as well! As Frank said, this is a great way to start a Sunday morning.

I didn't follow the link the first time. Totally agree, that second shot on the vault is fantastic

Holy crap, Russ-man is at it AGAIN
Gotta love how that "X" hums along in low light. Great work here Russ. I'm particularly drawn to the B&W frame. Something there just continues to speak to me.

Many thanks, Frank. I appreciate your feedback and it's helpful to 'hear' your reactions to specific shots.
Thanks for your comments, Bill. I try different positions for shooting beam. I do like the perspective from about 20 degrees off from dead on to the end of the beam, but this time out I wanted to work more from the side. I've found that no position is perfect, which is why I like to try them all throughout the course of a season. As for the bars shots, that first one is a smaller portion (maybe 1/4) of the full frame that I would prefer. It is challenging to keep everything in frame with the movement not only up and down (above and below both upper and lower bars) but also closer and farther from me as they move from one bar to the other. Moving the camera with the athlete can help, but I'd have to be a LOT faster moving my focus points on the fly to work much tighter than I do. I'm working on it...
amlsml: Thank you! Yes, these athletes are fantastic.
Hey Larry, thanks for your feedback and for taking a look at the gallery posted by the University. I feel like I'm finally making some progress with vault. I still maintain it's stupidly difficult to shoot, but I'm earning a few more keepers each time. I'll post a couple more below.
Bryan: I don't know how much attention to my images these girls pay, though I'm sure they check out the galleries posted on the team website. I do think the SID is appreciative. And yeah, great fan support for sure. Thanks for the props!

&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">This video was just posted on facebook. It's of Utah's beam routines at last night's meet, but it also is of some old guy photographing those routines (under the beam and to the left). This could be the break I've been waiting for....

The bar(pardon the pun) has been raised again every time you post your gymnastics shots. Great set and different take from other shots you posted in the past.

godfather: Thank you.
Thanks for your comments, Gregory. My shutter speeds vary based on the lens, and even though the lighting in this arena is 'steady,' the amount of light varies from place to place as well. My ISO varies from 3200-5000, aperture varies from 2.2-2.8, and shutter speed varies from 1/800-1/1250.
Hey thanks, Jerry. I'm looking for variety within a lot of 'sameness,' so I appreciate the comment.

Every time I return to FM the first place I go is Sports to see if you have posted another gymnastic series. Finally another!
Beautiful work with really different angles in these series. Along with the everything else I'm always impressed with the quality and consistency of your colour. How do you set white balance? Does it change for different parts of the gym?
Do you ever use Auto ISO?
