p.1 #1 · 12 countries in 2012

Well...almost. 12 countries in 14 months, but I visited two separate land masses in a few countries in 2012 (Norway, Indonesia, Malaysia) if that counts?

This made me realize I should post more here. I have been so darn busy this last year I hardly have time to share my photos publicly. It was tough choosing between nearly 40,000 images taken in 2012, between great expansive landscapes, remotes areas of the Earth, endless pagodas, monasteries, temples, holy places, indescribable scenes with unreal flora and fauna, and some of the most welcoming hospitable people I have met despite their poverty. It was a humbling year to say the least, but here are a few of my favorites:

1.) My home country, USA... but not my home state. Ruby beach in the Pacific Northwest.

2.) Singapore, as seen from the marina.

3.) Doha, Qatar. A man makes a traditional rebab.

4.) Dubai, UAE. The Burj Khalifa as seen from above.

5.) Jerusalem, Israel. The scene inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

6. a) Preikestolen, Norway (mainland) looking down Lysefjord towards Lysebotn.

6. b) NyÅlesund, Norway (Spitsbergen). 79˚ North latitude, making it "the northernmost permanent settlement in the world".

7.) Santorini, Greece.

8.) Bathsheba, Barbados. Looking inland instead of out towards the surf.

9. a) Penang, Malaysia (mainland). A man shows me the art of pulled tea.

9. b) Kuching, Malaysia (Borneo). Boeing, an odd feeling to be so connected to the states and so far away.

10. a) Jakarta, Indonesia (Java). The scene from my hotel overlooking a slum before the rains.

10 b) Kalimantan, Indonesia (Borneo). An orangutang rehabilitation center on the Kahayan river, and a local guide's daughter showing the way.

11.) Ha Noi, Viet Nam. A local girl is distracted despite the chaos of traffic around her.

12.) Bagan, Myanmar. Dhammayangyi temple from 1100AD as seen from a hot air balloon.

Thanks Bill - I am indeed very fortunate. With the exception of the first photo, the remaining countries I visited were places I worked or transited for work. I flew an obscenely large number of flights in the last 14 months... something like 90 flight totaling close to 340 hours.

I am the senior engineer on an atmospheric science project whose data contribute to climate modeling and weather forecasting, as well as satellite calibration and validation. I build the instrument responsible for these measurements so it's my duty to keep them calibrated and operational - it's a high rep rate low power green aerosol LIDAR similar to those used by the police to catch speeders. This summer, I led studies in SE Asia looking at the influence of human induced biomass burning on the onset of monsoon season by placing instrumentation at the source of these agricultural fires and then downwind several countries away to watch how the smoke and pollutants transited within the atmosphere.

Anyway I could talk forever about my work if I am not careful... The project has granted me the opportunity to travel to some great places - the South Pole, New Zealand, Russia, all throughout Europe, India, Nepal, and those shown above. I am very grateful to be able to bring my camera when there is downtime!

Thank for the comments :-)

That's a tough question... I am an avid rock climber and just generally an outdoors person, so in that aspect Norway is pretty hard to beat. The only thing that doesn't make Norway first place without any doubts is how expensive everything is there.

Instead, I'd say Vietnam and Myanmar are tied for first place because of how (relatively) easy it is to get around there, how hospitable the people are, and an odd sense of calm and peace despite some extreme chaos and energy to the places. I like a challenge when I travel and those places certainly delivery in terms of exploring and getting gratification from finding your way. Both offer some of the best food I've had, a great selection of sightseeing and history, and varied landscapes/sights.
