Only Alaska could provide such a beautiful backdrop. Great capture!

Absolutely my most favorite thread of the year. It is just so inspirational to look through all these threads during the year with all of the talent and beautiful locations. Then everybody posts in this best of the best thread. Some fantastic shots in here.
I would like to humbly submit my favorite image of the year. This is looking down the Herbert river at sunset in mid winter here in Juneau Alaska. Happy new year everybody. Ron
Hard to pick. Have quite a few I'm fond of. I'll pick the one that got the most attention:
(it was part of an iReport on CNN that netted me nearly 40k views -- Aurora Borealis in eastern Iowa http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-815376)
So many wonderful photos!!
Here is my humble contribution.

I still feel the chill when I take a look at this sunset photo.
I was at the Balackwater National Wildlife Refuge all by myself for almost three hours on that day.
But, even though I was so scared... I could not leave the Blackwater because the sunset was gorgeous!
Now..2012 is coming to an end. Hope we all have a wonderful year of 2013!
I'm afraid that I have not selected a single favorite of mine from 2012 - probably because I simply cannot select such a thing. If you are interested, I have shared a group of 2012 favorites here: http://www.gdanmitchell.com/2012/12/30/2012-favorites
I see so many outstanding photos in the thread and I feel a bit out of place. However, incentive to improve both my photography and post processing skilss.
Finally, I decided to post my favorite. I captured the photo just after sunrise on November 30. Before sunrise the sky light up with some color, but I watched more storm clouds roll in and more color when the sun rose. I noticed the sea weed began to show color.
Yes, an HDR, but I like it. Also, you can just make out the white Christmas lights highlighting the red hut and picket fence.
