p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sony RX1 Video Mode and full manual control

I have a question regarding the video mode on the RX1. I can't seem to get the controls to go full manual. Even when I am in M mode ( or any other mode for that matter) the camera want to control shutter speed and aperture. Even my NEX cameras all let me manually control the Aperture and Shutter. I switched cam to MF mode, and tried all modes but does;'t seem to work. I do a lot of video and stills, but I need full manual for video and was really looking forward to shooting this at F2.
Any thoughts? This is kinda of a deal breaker for me.

What shutter speed/aperture are you trying to set? I thought that the shutter speed was fixed in video mode, or is that just older cameras?

i dont own RX1 so can't directly help, but here is what dpreview says:

"Switching to the movie position on the mode dial gives access to PASM movie modes - pressing the 'Rec' button from any other shooting mode gives P-mode movies"

Sony mentions RX1 as having manual video controls so I think a trip to the manual might be whats needed here.

^^^ That's the way it works on the A99 as well, hit the movie record button in stills mode and it defaults to auto everything, but when you turn the control dial to movie you can simply select P/A/S/M and go from there.

Its really annoying that you can't simply hit record and match your shooting mode, making it easy to go between both without turning the control dial back and forth, and there's no way to change it. Outside of the crappy video quality, its the thing I hate most about the A99 as it renders the video button completely useless.

Congrats on the RX1. Until I started shooting video with the A99, I was planning on getting one as my "35mm lens." Now that's not the case.

Thank you! That solved it. PRetty annoying that you can't just hit record in M mode.

So, out of curiousity, what shutter speeds are available for video? As far as I understand, about 1/60 is the slowest possible, and the higher you go, the more choppy your video might get. Am I missing something?

I agree, as with the Sony RX100, and what curious80 mentioned, you have to switch to movie mode to enable manual shooting, else it will automatically default to Program Auto mode. I had the same problems on the RX100.

Its also annoying that when you switch to movie mode, the histogram won't display. I also cannot understand why Sony did not allow for the RX1 50/75mm crop mode for video shooting. Even the A99 allows for 1.5x APC crop for video shooting.

Carsten, I think if you shoot fully manual, all shutter speeds will be available, but normally you would want to mimic a 180 degree shutter for smoothness, which means to shoot as close to 2x the frame rate, ie for 24fps use 1/50s, 50 fps 1/100s, 60fps 1/125s . If you slow down the shutter too much say to 360deg (ie same speed as frame rate or lower) you will get ghosting effects with movements. And if you speed it up too fast, you will get the choppy movements, just like in the movie Private Ryan. I plan to shoot some manual videos when my RX1 arrives but judging from the video output of the A99, I think the RX1 will also be as poor IQ wise. Samples I have seen on the internet from both the RX1 and A99 looks to be of a really low resolution with plenty of moire and aliasing.

Sorry but I have the same issue on my RX1 that I cannot change the aperture, it is selected automatically when I hit the record button both on M mode and when the Dial is on the Movie mode as well, what is the 'trick' here because I'm not getting it. I can't believe this camera wouldn't have full manual controls for video, please help...

Set the mode dial to movie mode, hit the Fn button, select the Movie icon in the top left corner of the screen. There you can choose between P, A, S, or M for movie mode.
