Seems likely to me that both will happen, sort of. Both will be in the D800 body -- as a 24mp DX, and (in about a year) the 16mp D4 FX sensor. The latter, especially, will not likely break 6mp without a grip, or 8 with.
Not really interested in a 7DII unless it comes with a completely new sensor design with much better noise and DR performance ... there are no indications that's going to happen so far.
As for the "D400, 16mp high ISO with at least 8fps"....I very much doubt ISO performance will be better than the D800 (which isn't really that good a the pixel level), so the only advantage over the D800 would be 2 FPS (DX mode) -- not really sufficient reason to spend $2k when for an extra $1k the D800 provides so much more versatility.
For me, the D400 will need to have 24MP with at least similar noise performance as the D800 and 8 FPS and "pro AF", otherwise l'd rather wait for a 36MP D4s.

Although I just purchased an almost new used D700 -this is what I'd go for - take the D700 and drop in the D4 sensor.

I doubt Nikon will do that again as they did with the D3.

Not that I disagree with your doubts, EB, but which would be better, losing d4 sales to the d700II, losing d4 sales to Canon, or simply losing a sale because the d4 is too expensive for the vast majority of buyers?
IMO, it's much better to compete with yourself and sell everything that you possibly can, than to not compete and lose sales. But, WDIK?
Thanks to all that participated in the poll. The results are quite interesting and somewhat surprising to me. Dunno why, but I had expected a larger number of people buying both. Regardless, the number of players in the poll are more than expected, so thanks for that!
thanks

I could not agree more. I wish Nikon would get this concept. Stop worrying about parasitic loss from one of your own products by another of your own products. Better that than the competition. Thom Hogan has been harping on that now for years.

I'd sell my d800 for a D700MKII if it had even better base ISO DR and lower high ISO noise. Not that I'm complaining about my D800, but I'd take the better image quality, especially if it kept most of the D800 features (except for live view of course)
I doubt this will happen any time soon.
I'd rather have Nikon come out with updates to their lenses like the 17-35AFS, 20/2.8D, 105/2D, 135/2D, etc.

+1 John....nice to dream, but not likely going to happen.
I would be all over a D400 if the high ISO performance was better and I would want at least 24 megapixels. I shoot
alot of wildlife and the ability to crop and still retain a lot of detail would be of huge interest since I can't afford a 500-600mm lens. I love my D300 but I am ready for a D400.

Jim Pearce, an avid birder, is in complete agreement with you, as are a number of other folks wanting a high MP d400.
Personally, I am not confident that Nikon can do much improvement over the d300, with pixel density that high. My main questions on that would be for noise and then FPS. I wonder if they can move 24mp at 8fps or higher, while keeping the price reasonable. More importantly, do you like the noise performance of the d3200, especially when you talk about cropping?
I'm very anxious to see the noise performance of the new 24mp sensor in the d5200.
thanks

I'm with Kerry, 24 on DX is not like 24 on FX. And to be honest, I don't want the huge 24MP file sucking up card and disk space and filling up the buffer. I'd be much happer with a 16MP D400 ... or hell, give me a 12MP D400 but with 2+ stops better high ISO performance over the D300 and 8 FPS and I would be tickled pink with purple poka dots.
Honestly, when you think about it, the D400 would be the pro-level the sports and wildlife camera of the DX line-up where ISO, AF performance and FPS are top concerns ... much like the D4. High MP are not needed and there are lower cost options to get the higher MP.
Like the D4/D800 relationship, I think DX should have a similar D400/D7200 relationship.
