Shot a bunch of hockey lately but here's a sample from a fairly local youth game...
Hespeler vs New Hamburg, Pee Wee AE
Hespeler Rink 1 has better access (penalty boxes with no glass) but worse lighting. These will be mostly at ISO6400, custom WB, likely 1/500th, with a 300/f2.8 and maybe a 28/f1.8 mixed in.
Great again....
Close up faces... I don't know how many times I've overheard a parent say something to another parent like, "nice shots but I'm not getting anything this year" only to see there childs face close up and be buying minutes later.
Nice Shots, I shoot a lot of Mites level as my son is on a travel team... I know how bad the lighting is in many of these rinks and shooting through dirty glass isn't fun either.
Anthony... I hear what you're saying... Again I'm sometimes amazed at tournies what sells and what doesn't... And it often goes against what photos figure will sell too. Thanks for the look!
ACNY... Thanks. Yeah bench or box access makes a big difference for sure. You lose some of the attacking shots you get from the corners but it's better for isolation shots.
Scott and Vilimo... Thanks a lot for checking 'em out and the comments!
Andy... Yeah I've strobes hockey a bit, but not as much over the last few years. Back when ISO800 was the upper clean limit on camera bodies there was a lot more need for it and now unless it's a tournament in the very worst lighting I just jack up the ISO. I still have the strobes but use them more for T+I stuff than game action.
