Only a small improvement
I think we are all in a similar boat, the more we do the better we get.
Looking at the two sets the processing is much better (really like it actually).
You have avoided direct sun and are shooting later in the day?
The area and backgrounds are much better and helps to frame the subject well.
Posing is really good too...I also find a second shoot with a client is always better too.
Keep up the good work, I'm sure they will love these.
Edit: Did they notice the difference?...and what did they say?

Nah. You ain't progressed at all. What have you been doing with your time??!
I think this is an epic idea for a new thread. Get people to post a before and after link for those who want to show their development. Would make for some really educational material for the likes of amateurs like me, and will have some cracking photos to look through........

You can look at the two sets and really see how many different factors have led to set 2 being so much better.
Quality of light - better compositions - better posing - and consistent processing.
I echo the above poster that this could be a very good idea fora thread, because I think you would see some constant variables that improve to make sets better.
Personally I am probably about a year behind you Robin, as I remember reading / seeing your first wedding post when I lurked in the wedding Forum. This year was our first year in weddings / family portraits so hopefully we can follow in your foot steps

I look past the post processing and composition. But I can tell you really improved in your interaction with this family to make them feel at east in front of the camera. Kudos to you.

These are really great, man. I like the newer edits hands down. Plus, your composition has improved immensely. Does it make sense when I say that it is a good mixture between editorial and natural posing?

To me, the main improvement that shows is the lighting, much more consistent in the newer set.
Somewhat stylistic but the newer set also shows more of the general environment relative to the people (is this good or bad?). Though it does bring out the season(s) or the time of year better.

Thanks everyone. Just bought my self AB1200, giant soft box, battery pack. Hopefully I can keep pushing my self.
Why not get an Einstein? You get the same maximum power + a minimum power that is 2 stops less than an AB400, plus wireless triggering, better color consistency, better flash durations, digital 1/10th control, better modeling lamp, beep when refreshed, etc...
