p.1 #1 · 2 College Girls - 4 Pictures

Been forever since I posted here, and even longer since I have done a controlled environment portrait. I was looking to experiment with TTL for my lighting instead of my ABs, so I called up Katy who is always happy to be my subject and she brought a friend, Liz. Fun was had by all.

Very nice looking work. Would you mind taking the time to detail your lighting, especially modifiers etc. could be helpful to many starting down this path

Thanks
Gerry

Hey Gerry,

Happy to share the lighting.

Image (1) 3 speedlights + 1 reflector
-Main modifier is a Lastolite Joe McNally Ezybox Hotshoe - 24 x 24" power with the diffuser still on (the joe mcnally version makes a big difference with softness if you are wondering)
-Hair light is a lumiquest Softbox III and the diffuser still on
-Background light has no diffuser and zoomed to max (which is only 135)
-reflector was on a posing table

Image (2) 3 speedlights
-Main modifier is a Lastolite Joe McNally Ezybox Hotshoe - 24 x 24" power with the diffuser still on (the joe mcnally version makes a big difference if you are wondering)
-Hair light is a lumiquest Softbox III and the diffuser still on
-Background light has no diffuser and zoomed to max (which is only 135)

Image (3&4) 2 speedlights
-Main modifier is a Lastolite Joe McNally Ezybox Hotshoe - 24 x 24" power with the diffuser still on
-Background light has a diffuser and zoomed to max (which is only 135) held by the other girl it was originally blowing out the pole behind them so I pulled up the little white fill card as a modifier.

A couple of points to note, the main light was on a boom and in almost every picture (it was that close to them), and if you are just starting with TTL, 0 is not your friend, I think in first two shots main was + 1EV, backgrounds were -2 and -2.3.

Hope this helps,

Sean

Refreshing to see no lens flares, no washout, no back-lighting, no tilt, no blown highlights, no 70's slide look, good separation in a portrait. I still think technique means something. Good work!

Nice set. Nice lighting.

In #3, I don't see the need to show anything left of her hand.

#4 Even though she is looking and facing left, I'd encourage you to consider cropping off the left side of the photo to see how you like it.

Kudos to your models. Nicely done.

Photos look great to me.

Only nit for me is that I would have liked to see catchlights in the eyes on the fourth picture.

That first one is hot, Sean! Nice job. The others rock as well, just fabulous lighting! I love in No. 3 how her body leans away from the pole, and has a slight twist/turn. The position creates some interesting energy. Nice job!

All very nice, but #1 knocks me for a loop -- very '50s. Not to say I don't like the color version, Sean, but that would make a fine b&w.

The girl in #2 is a knockout. The second picture of her though makes her butt look huge and her leg too thin.

I also liked the dark eyes on her in this shot, soft and sweet was in the first shot.

I can see what you are saying, however knowing she was sticking her butt out on purpose in every picture we took but portraits is probably why this was the only shot to make FB...haha
