Derrick Favors is said to have a 7'4" wingspan. Needed just about all of the full frame to capture it.
Have to say that the Lakers look terrible. I don't imagine that will last, but until they find their mojo, they're a wreck. And Kobe couldn't have looked less enthused at t-ball tournament! 5 Shots from the game, starting with the span:
3. I used my Canon 200 f/1.8 with 1.4x (first generation) on my 1DIV last night and was amazed at how well it worked tracking the dancers. Very encouraging for the upcoming gymnastics season!
Thanks to all for the comments. Still feeling my way around new and older equipment, and looking forward to mixing it up throughout what's looking like a long season ahead.
Russ....you are putting up some great shots. The colors and sharpness are real nice. +1 on the 200 and Mark !V....I haven't tried it yet on the DX but I'm thinking that will be the "go to" combo for wrestling.
Russ....on #4 - was that an intentional crop? The uphill floor kinda throws things a little off for me. I played around with it to getting the floor OK and even the person in the front row straight (pink shirt and blue camera)....but then the people in the seats in the upper right seem to be leaning to their left. Could be my lac of sleep too...
Thanks, Frank. Yeah, the 200 on the DX will be a combo I will rely on for gymnastics. I expect the smidgen of extra wiggle room provided by the full frame to help me out a bit.
#4 is just a weird shot. A year ago I wouldn't have thought of saving it, but I've noticed that for some reason, shots like this get picked up all the time. (And I did see this shot used online, though I can't remember where, with the heading "Losing it" referring to the whole Lakers situation.) I usually use the railings in the stands or the backboard as a guide for my leveling. In this (originally posted) shot, I thought the railing was true, but I think it's off a bit. Here's a slight rotation. Floor is still on an angle, but maybe this looks better (if you can overlook the cut-off watermark ).

Thanks, Caleb. Never had the 200 f/2 IS, but have had the f/1.8 for quite a few years. I don't use it nearly as much as I should.
I guess I've been spending your money mentally then. Also, when you're not using and you feeling like shipping it up to MN, feel free. It would be nice to to rent a 70-200 every weekend.
Great seeing your work around Russ. Yeah the Lakers are the story of the early NBA season for the wrong reasons. Hope they get it dialed soon, they have some likeable stars that haven't got it going yet. Great images, thanks for sharing.
Your gymnastics shots are the best. I am counting on your great gymnastics shots this coming season as a tutorial. I am going to start shooting youth gymnastics since I have a niece that is active.
Thanks, Frank. It's funny (but probably not surprising) that shots of Lakers players are among the most frequently used. Their recent circus hasn't hurt in that regard.
dj: Yeah, if you subscribe to the idea that any attention is good attention, the Lakers are doing well. Otherwise, here's hoping they can turn it around, and I have a funny feeling they will! Thanks for your comments.
Thanks, mdalby. Gymnastics is just around the corner....
