Will try to make do with the Canon hard case, or the Think Tank Street Walker Pro(if it'll hold the bare 500mm) until the Glass Limo appears. Then make a decision.
I went for the LowePro bag for my new 500 Mk II. I carry mine in tough country and I like their backpack system. So far it has worked pretty well for me. I can deploy the lens/camera rather quickly and still carry it all comfortably and safely on my back.
I just checked the Gura Gear Batflae series and they look great too, but will set you back a lot more, although as someone said not much compared to the price of your precious supertele.
Batflae can get a lot more gear in them, but they are heavier. So if it's just mainly to carry supertel lens and camera ready to shoot, the Kinesis or Thinktank type bag will be better suited.
Tough choices, but it's great to have lot's of choices.
The Think Tank Glass Limo Backback it's finally available at B&H. It spec'd to hold a bare 600mm, a bare 500mm, or a camera mounted 400mm. However, I'm pretty sure that the pre-available specs said that it would hold the camera mounted 500mm. And I believe the manufacturer's site still maintains this.
I've been waiting for this bag for my 500mm + camera. I wonder whether B&H tried this combination and nixed it.
Have not used it much yet, but bag with 500 and 7D seems to carry very nice. I was hoping I would get a 1.4 in with it but no go. Wanted light and it seems to fill the bill. Was also interested in Lowepro trekker 600aw but thought it might be to big and heavy. Still not sure if I did the right thing??

Unless the 500I is substantially longer than the 500II it doesn't look promising with a 1 series body. I'll look into this.

It doesn't look good from the photos that Duane posted on POTN. The difference in lengths between the mark I and II is only 0.1 inch.
The difference in length between the 600 and 500 is about 2.5 inches. So your reasoning is reasonable. But perhaps the taper at the narrow end of the bag prevents the fit.
A call to B&H or the manufacturer may be in order.

Yes, that is a safe course of action. Based on their "Streetwalker pro" backpack example, even the bag made specifically for 400 f/2.8 lens allows only a very snug fit, so that I have to stretch the top of the bag in order to get the 1D prism bulge in.
The "Glass limo" appeal would be diminished significantly if it can not accomodate 500 + 1D series body mounted.

That's also my experience with the Streetwalker/400 combo, Peter. Which is why I'm being a bit cagey with the Limo for the 500 - it may barely NOT fit, and so would have zero appeal for me.
I also wonder whether it may be prudent to have space in the bag for decoupling the camera from the lens for transporting in order to minimize potential damage due to hazardous impacts.
